Guest m35514h
Ahh yes i got my z running last week, it is a very loud and torquey machine. I absolutely love it. All i have left to do to make it run great is get my new filter, fix my speedometer(was working fine then the needle just made a whirring sound and spun around the dial, and now just sits pointing directly down), get tach running, rebuild carb, and get it to stop throwing the Alternator/water pump belt. I seriously have no idea how to get it to stop throwing the belt. It throws it whenever i put my foot into it. At first we thought it was misalligned, it was got a new pulley and it still throws it. The belt isnt hurt in any way its just off. We are getting it plenty tight, and i have no clue what to do. Any ideas on the speedo would be nice. And finally rims and tires. I have an orange 280z, and it will definately need some bigger meats. I have no clue what to get so i would really appreciate suggestions. Sorry for the long post. VRJoe
You may want to do a search about throwing belts, there has been some advice in the past. One of the most common problems is mis-alignment, the next is the wrong belt type. Make sure the V of the belt matches the V of the pulley. If they don't match that could be the cause. On the Speedo if sounds like the needle came off the shaft, or the gears spun. You'll probably have to open it up and take a look inside. Hope that helps. - Joe
Guest m35514h
well i am just going into autozones and picking random belts off of random chevy v8 cars over the years, maybe i got lucky and got a good one, i got on it a little tonight and it didnt throw. do you mean open the gauge up or the transmission, i am assuming you mean the gauge
Guest Anonymous
Get a quality belt that won't strech into a loop under accelleration and throw itself off. Best bet I would guess is a new car dealer or Napa.
VRJoe
There are different V angles on V-belts, if the angle on the belt doesn't match the angle of the pulley the belt will get thrown off. Also be sure the pulley V angles match, if they're different you'll never get a belt to stay on ( all the pulleys must match the belt ). It also sounds like the guage needs to checked out. If you hear a whiring sound at the guage, then the trans is probably OK. -Joe
Phantom
Tires - the widest you can get in the rear without modifying the suspension or flaring the venders will be 245's - and that is if the offset on your wheels is perfect. The widest you can run in the front will be 225's. None of these will handle the torque your engine can put out. Even with an LSD my LS1 overpowers the 225/50-16's I'm running on my '77 280Z without even trying.
