scottyMIz Posted June 1, 2003 Share Posted June 1, 2003 how many guys have swapped the whole dist into an 81 engine?I did, i had to do some modifications.The problem i had and a question is that it wouldn't time right on the scale on the engine block it was like 2" under it.My question is will it still run that far advanced?I modified the dist so it would turn to get the timing mark on the scale.I think i have it right but i don't want to mess up the engine.I heard that the cps from the 83 would drop right in but i found out quick that it won't. fl327 Posted June 1, 2003 Share Posted June 1, 2003 not sure about this the conversion, but i know that the 82-83 setup is better not so much because of the internal cas-but the later setup stock timing should is 24btdc on an 83 vs. 20btdc on the 81. distributor and comptuer, no resistors on the injectors, i think thats it, time to pull out the fsm, not sure on this one. it will run with the distributor cranked all the way advanced on my car, but not all the way retarded, it doesnt like it from my experience. my car actually ran pretty good with the timing advanced all the, but im running less boost than you so i have more room for error i believe. i run 83 efi and switched over from 81 efi. i used the entire 83 harness though, so im not sure what other differences there are. i currently run at 24btdc, i like the factory feel myself, but i have run advanced with no issues at all, and didnt have any issues with it. are you sure you cant move the wires over to get timing down? scottyMIz Posted June 1, 2003 Author Share Posted June 1, 2003 nope i had to use the 83 cas to replace the 81 unit cuz mine stopped working for some reason.I had to take the ring off the end off the old dist that was in the car it kinda floats on the 83 shaft bottom but it works which is all i needed.I have it timed close to right now but it has more lag now i might just have to fine tune it i didn't have time yesterday hey you got aim?
