Found a great little program for bench racing

Hey guys I just found this great free DOS program (may not work for Windows XP) that you tell it a ton of info about your car, stuff like peak hp and torque at what rpms, compression ratio, where's your engine and what wheels does it drive, turbo boost at what rpms, redline and where you want it to shift, gear and differential ratios, car weight height and width, tire width height and rim size, Coefficient of drag, all kinds of stuff, and then it plots a graph for you and shows you your cars acceleration from everything from 0-10 to 0-100 mph, your cars estimated top speed, how long it takes to get there, your 1/4 mile time, your power and torque curves (which you can tell it instead if you have a dyno graph, just remember to correct for driveline loss) and can even tell you your optimum shift points and launch rpm! It will even simulate the wheelspin at the begining of a clutch dump launch! (though that's the one thing I can't seem to get it to simulate right for my car, as dumping the clutch at anything above 2000 revs spins the tires all thru first gear... I havent found a way to change how well the tire grips yet but I bet it's in there)

Believe it or not, if I put in all my info and customize my own shift points for first and second (since I can't rev any higher than 5500 rpms in first before shifting or my tranny grinds gears) it gives me a 0-60 time of 6.7 seconds...... exactly the time I've gotten several times now when hand timing myself after I found out my speedo was off (speedo shows 65 instead of 60... used to think I was doing 0-60 in 6.3) It also shows an estimated 1/4 mile time of 14.8 at around 94 mph's...... which is exactly what I've been thinking I should get just based on weight and power and torque curves and all that, plus some street racing and bench racing with friends. Heh I know this is wishful thinking but if I let it set optimum shift points for me, it will shift out of first at 6850 rpm and out of second at around 6600, doing a clutch dump launch at 2500 rpm, it gives me a much nicer 0-60 time of 5.9 seconds... this thing has been accurate enough on everything I wonder if that means it could be done if my tranny didn't grind. The other thing is trying to get it to accurately simulate my bad tire spin...... or to get me some better tires! Anyways guys check this program out it's a fun little thing to play with..... and if you do and have some real times to compare it to PLEASE post if the program 'gets it right'! I wanna see if this thing is this accurate for anyone else!

the address for the program is:

Testing it out with some other cars, it comes with a database with a ton of them up to about 1998, I'm comparing them to published performance times, things pretty darn close, usually within a tenth of a second... crazy

LOL it even lets you drag race up to 6 cars at once!!! OMG this program rocks! 11:30p I can't stop playing with it.

Oh by the way for anyone who does try it, when you are entering your torque and hp #'s you have to put the actual engine #'s, NOT what you get at the wheels. The program takes out 17% for driveline losses so figure if you only have rear wheel #'s at 17% to these. This is for manual tranny cars it also has different settings for automatics, and you can adjust all these percentages also.

Yea, I have been using Cartest for a long time and love it. Cartest 2000 for windows even has road racing simulations too. The math and algorithms that the programmer uses are highly accurate.

It is invaluable for simulating different gear ratios for performance comparisons. You can know for sure whether swapping in that 3.90 is really worth it .

Here is a screen cap from the windows version:

yeah but the DOS version is free :) the Windows version costs too much for a program you're only gonna have fun with or use a few times, and from what I can see it doesn't have any more features. Graphically they are even very similiar, and seem to display all the same info. I would LIKE to have the windows version though I'm sure it's better in SOME way. The DOS version can do road racing and even comes with a list of well known tracks and will give you estimated lap times on those courses.

I have actually used it to reverse engineer what horsepower I have versus the times I see on the track and G-tech. It is very accurate. Like I said before, I have also used it to simulate gear ratio changes and whether it is better to launch in second gear rather than first (first is better).

Guy,

The CD of a 280ZX is .34. That car is already in the database. Just copy it to a new car and change the engine and gear data.

can someone post the info for a 240? I wanna make one, but I don't know the % of weight over front wheels and whatnot.

The % of weight on a V8 Z is around 50%, I think stock is around 51 or 52%. The CD is .476 . The frontal area is 20 sq ft.

I dont know what happened but the more info I tell this program the less accurate it seems to get..... when I went in and adjusted some car specific settings, nothing major, my car went from 0-60 in 6 seconds to 0-60 in 10 seconds and I know my car isn't that slow!! Funny thing is, now that I got my hands on the windows version, it seems to me the dos version is more accurate. *shrug* it's still a lot of fun though :)

This program is addictive too... now that I have it it's prodded me to finally go get my car weighed and stop guessing... found a weigh station a few miles from home that will do it for $12 :)

hey now I have a stat question, does anyone know what stock ZX rims, the 'swastika' four point type, of of early 80-81 zx's, what they weigh with tires?
