Guest TAlchemist
well here locally someone is selling a Chevy 350 engine. they are asking only 150 and the engine was according to the owner running until it began to make some knocks. He checked the crankshaft and it had some warn lobes so he removed it to replace the crank. Then he decided to just go ahead with a new engine and is selling the 350. My family mechanic said i would probally end up spending 2000 to get it running again since the rods and pistons are nodoubtably trashed and the cylanders probally need reboring ect. What should i do...pass it up and save for a 350 crate motor? look for another 350 local that perferably runs...ect.
Tim240z
Well, I Love to do my own work, so Maybe rebuild. BUT, you may be better off with a crate engine. If that engine has stock heads and other parts, then don't bother. If you are going for decent HP, then you will end up paying more than you would for a decent crate engine. Also, you can most likely get a better deal from a junkyard for a motor that is probably in better shape. Just my opinion. Tim
Guest TAlchemist
that is what my mechanic said, i can find a better running engine if i look, i just wanted a second opinion. thanks
Tim240z
IMHO, go to a JY and pick up a late 60s, early 70s truck engine. They're cheap and the blocks are stong (4 bolt mains etc). Find one that has the block number that ends with xxxxxx10. If you plan to build your own, this is a good starting point. If the bottom end is in good shape, pick up a cam, lifters, set of vortec heads and inlet manifold and carb. $2000 plus the price of the block and you will have a decent (300hp or so) motor. Guest zfan
Go to junk yard and look for a 350 4 bolt 010 block. No more than .30 over and go from there. Mike
Guest Anonymous
I found this 73 Monte Carlo for $450.00 that had a SBC 350 with the Edelbrock Performer Package.I drove it for 1500 miles with no oil consumption.I have not put the engine in my project but I can still fire up the Monte Carlo sled and drive it. I wanted a simple engine warm up like the Edelbrock package and found it in a driveable car. I was at a garage sale and was given a 350 engine with spun rod bearing. A renter left an old Chevy van with 350 + 4 barrel and 700r4 . It has a rear main seal leak but hauls. Hey this stuff is around if you start looking. See an old sled of a Chevy ...ask?.... surprsing what you will find and the people you meet.I hear a lot of those 80 Camaro's are going for less than $500.00 at auction. It does not cost anything to ask.
