HICKL
I know, I know, everybody says don't mess with the stock AC compressor, but I couldn't see opening up a system that was working perfectly so I had to try. I have the 350 bolted up and just pulled the compressor out of the way. I want to try and fab a bracket and try to use it but I'm not sure if it will even fit under the hood. Has anybody done this? Have any picks? My engine is in the JTR position. Thanks Jeff (I live in Texas and its 95 degrees and I can't afford to have a new AC installed in my project car right now) Hickl

VRJoe
I'm in the same position as far A/C. I want to mount the A/C on the drivers side over the valve cover. I'm prototyping a bracket to do this and will make final measeurements once I set the engine back in. I'll post my results when it's done. I want to make sure that a strut brace will clear the compressor, that way I know the hood on any setup will clear. - Joe
randy 77zt
i have a 77 with a 81zxt engine and oem a/c works good.nothing wrong with fabrcating a compressor brackit.just make sure it is solid.
HICKL
So am I to assume no-one has succesfully done this yet on a 350 car? VRjoe, I am trying to so the same thing, but I'm not sure it will fit. Not enough room between the valve cover and strut tower and too tall if mounted over valve cover. (at least thats how it looks to me). anybody done this????anyone???
randy 77zt
what year z is it?mine is on the lower driver's side of engine.if you dont want to build brackits you will have to switch compressors to use a ready made brackit system like march .if you have a 70 to 74 z you have a big piston type ac compressor-it would be better to get a modern small compressor because of less hp to turn it. HICKL
Its a 76. Do you have a V8 in your car?
randy 77zt
you should be able to fab a brackit for lower left side of motor and run compressor is close to same spot.if the hoses need to be modified i cut the factory crimps of with a die grinder and a cutting wheel .then i get a piece of bulk hose and refit.take the stuff to an a/c shop and they can put new crips back on.you have same a/c system i have.except i have a turbo zxt motor.
