Had to post this when I saw it..... lots of people including myself have asked about this, an suck thru, SU turbo setup, but this is the first time I've seen one running two SU's..... it's a fuzzy pic, but awe inspiring nonetheless

Cool to look at, but fun to drive? Somewhat.

Pain in the butt to keep running right? Yes.

Constant tweaking? Yes.

Constant fear of detonation? Yes.

 

Will never go back....

I wonder why Crown didn't make their setup work with two carbs? The whole thing looks awesome..... if they were still around I'd probably have one of these in my car right now. A carbed 240 just seems like a dream come true.... turbo powered 240, simplicity of SU carbs..... too much fun, but I really dont see how they even tried to pull it off with one SU.

With a special needle that flowed more fuel. I was running two float bowls on my setup to keep it from leaning out around corners (fuel pump starvation).

 

The reason why they don't make these kind of systems any more is because modern EFI is far superior. If you like the "look", you can retrofit an EFI throttle body to the turbo inlet, and weld some injector bungs into the E88 manifolds. Or use some sort of TBI unit.

 

Come to think of it, wouldn't it be easier to just use the 280ZXt induction system as a starting point? Full circle...

It was MIG welded, the bends are like weld els and are smooth inside and out. Would be awesome polished! This is lined up for the stock T3 from a 280zx or 300zx (z31).

 

I didn't have any problems cold starting the car even though I had the carb so much lower than the intake (would start after about 1 second of cranking). Boost levels that you can run very on octain, ignition timing, tempurature, exhaust, C/R, etc.. But it is definately a cheap way to bolt on a few more horse power.

 

I'm willing to part with it now for $27 + shipping. It has a fine hair line crack, only surface. I would have loved to have had it TIG welded, but just didn't have the money at the time.

 

All you have to do is mount a carb infront of the turbo's intake, you can make like a right angle and raise the carb. I'm using the rest of the parts, except for the SU intake manifold, so if you need it I can hook you up with that as well. I also have the SU carb, front pipe to mount it up, but I would suggest a larger carb.

Hey Tony!!! I've had your site bookmarked for ages!! shot a lot of q and a's back and forth with ya about that supra engine setup! If you had offered this thing to me a month ago before finally buying a whole turbo engine I'd probably be running that in my car right now! Probably would have blown it up too... you think you could use that on a 10.3:1 compression engine? how much boost could you run with the high CR and crappy 91 octane gas? For the price I might buy that intake just to one day put it on something for fun and to have a bitchin one off Z.

Tony or someone, question, how exactly do you set up the throttle linkage to the SU's on a setup like this? That's one thing I've never been able to figure out.

 

Oh wait nm I finally see it!! I just picked out that long skinny rod going from the firewall to the carb....... mos and mos of looking at that picture and I finally spotted it :)

That linkage was a long piece of all thread, it had a little flex in it because it was so long. If I were to do it again I'd adapt some throttle linkage cable and mount it securely at both ends.

 

I couldn't tell ya for sure how many pounds of boost you could run. Would just have to exeriment a bit. The turbo itself isn't much usefull above 13 pounds or so. I'm still running the engine I had with the old carb setup now with EFI, so I'm proof that you can play around with these things without totalling an engine (just listen closesly for knocks). I would suggest using an O2 sensor and an air/fuel ratio guage. It'll give you a heads up on if you're running lean.

 

Start building a small intake manifold to join the SU 2 carbs, and also join the linkage. You may be able to make it with fiberglass (can you run gas over fiberglass?). Even a steel one would work just fine, if you have MIG welder. Then just mount that puppy infront of the turbo and use the Y pipe I made up. I think it would be much easier to mount a down draft carb though, lot more options too.

sure, 91325, however, I am tapped for cash at the moment, every penny I have getting tied up into this turbo engine, but if no one else snatches this thing up I'll probably get it sooner or later.
