Guest cbrunberg
How do I check my current strut spring rates? Can I just compress it 1 inch on a bathroom scale and read the scale? Also what length spring are most guys using on the street if they don't want to lower their car? What spting rates are you useing? Are you happy with it, and why? Thanks, Carl
Dave
Here is what I do using a drill press and bathroom scale. To check spring rate put the spring holder on (easier for the press to put even pressure) and put pressure till you hit 50lbs on your scale then set the inch dial to 1, 2, or what ever then from the 50lbs point apply one dial inch worth of pressure and what your scale reads will be your spring rate! Guest cbrunberg
Thanks for the input on testing spring rate. What spring rate is stock and what are you using? ANYBODY? Speak out... Carl
katman
Stock spring rate is in the factory service manual, what year/model you talking about? As far as what spring rates we all have, is this a poll, or do you have an application you're interested in? What's the intended purpose? I'm happy with a lot of different combinations, depends on what I'm trying to do with the car.
Guest cbrunberg
I guess this is kind of a poll. I hadn't thought of it that way at first. I was just getting more and more confused by the variety available. I know that many of these coilover units are universal but there will be an application chart givng diameter for different years then a range of spring lengths and rates without suggested application. I'm looking for weekend canyon driving, occasional drag, possibly a second set for open road coarse days... This is more general education. I've read a few reports were people complained their rates were too soft or too hard but rarely say what that rate was or what the fix was. Also I'm a bit confused about spring length. How much adjustment can you get on ride height? If you adjust the preload does that affect the handling. Maybe I can get some suggested reading. I used to have a book on suspension set up but I can't find it. My car is a '73 240, SBC, TH350 (200-4r conversion in the works) I'm hoping not to have to buy too many sets if possible. So yes, I guess this is a pole. Please pardon my lack of knowledge of forum protocols. Thanks Carl
