How does the fuel pump work

I have a 1982 280ZX with a Chev 350. The fuel pump is the stock fuel pump. It seems to work fine with no known problems.

The problem is that I do not drive the car every day and after it has set for several days the fuel evaproates or leaks down into the manifold. When I start the car I have to prime it with engine starter because I don't know how to make the fuel pump fill the bowl of the carbarator before I crank the engine.

Does the fuel pump start pumping when the key is in the on position, I may have a fuel switch on the oil pump sending unit.

I know, fix the carbarator, but it is not worth fixing. When I rework the engine it is gone anyway.

You have the stock 280zx fuel pump with a carb'd chevy 350?

Since the stock 280zx had efi, you are using a high pressure fuel pump in an application where you should have a low pressure pump. What fuel pressure regulator are you using?
