Guest Anonymous
Back in the early 90's I had sweet Black 84' 50TH Annv Turbo 300ZX that the tranny went out on me, at the time the tranny's were a small fortune to rebuild so I opted to start converting it to a Chevy powered V8, I absoultly loved the car and was really looking forward to doing the swap. A local Z shop manager had once dropped a sbc chevy into a 84 also and fabricated a oil pan to fit in it, well he lost intrest and sold me his oil pan that he made. I had built the motor for the car and that's about how far I got with the project. School and money got in the way and I ended up not finishing the project and I sold the car. Well now is a new day and I am really interested in doing this again with a 86' 300ZX I just purhased. I would like to either drop a complete pull out LT1 or LS1 and 4L60E trans in it and was just curious if anybody on this forum has done this swap or maybe has pictures of one already done. Thanks for any help! James
Guest SteveR
It's not an LT1, but I'm installing a V8 in my '86 as well. http://livethenow.com/tempdir/zcar Search mine and Darthmentos names on this board for a bit more info.
Guest Anonymous
Was the transmission crossmember very hard to fabricate? How bout the drive shaft? I noticed you have a stock style sbc oil pan on your motor did you have any clearance issues with that oil pan?
Guest SteveR
Was the transmission crossmember very hard to fabricate? How bout the drive shaft? I noticed you have a stock style sbc oil pan on your motor did you have any clearance issues with that oil pan? Actually, I haven't gotten to the transmission mount yet. However, since I'm using a T5 and the 84-86 turbo's used T5s, I've got a driveshaft from an 85turbo (needs the chevy slip-yoke) and hopefully will use the stock tranny mounts because the new transmission lines up perfectly. SO, when I finally start working on it again, I may have to fudge things around a bit to make the stock tranny mount and driveshaft work, but I'm pretty sure it will. The stock oil pan clears fine, but the motor sits kind of high (will definitely have to modifiy the hood to clear the carb/breather.) I could have gotten it lower, but not by much with the stock pan. warrenp
i went to look at a z that a guy put a 305 in toa dn he used a 350 tranny he definetly had hood clearance problems. the air filter was up through the hood it needed a cowl or scoop. the only thing i really didn't like we how the guy routed the exhaust it was single piped exhaust and it was routed low i think he also needed new springs that might help. but duel exhaust would have looked alot better. but no idea how to rout it????????? as you may have read i just bough a TPI i also have a 86 300zx but i was looking to pot the motor in to a 2wd nissan truck or possiably my 300zx. hoping maybe bein TPI might halp clearance problems??? i figure it's gotta be lower than a carb with an air filter?
