660Z
im in the prosses of building a 73 240z with a 400sb with the intent of some serious drag time.my question is what is the reaction of the car when a halfshaft u joint goes? does it damage the suspention, force the car left or right or just roll to a stop (open diff)? ive never raced a independant car before and would like to know what im in for. thank you for your imput im a new member and this site has been a huge help. pparaska
Welcome! When the halfshafts let loose, they can damage the control arm, the underside of the unibody, and take out the brake lines. A few have built halfshaft loops that attach to the control arm to capture the flailing halfshafts when the break. The other thing to consider is that the stub axles break and can cause the halfshaft to flail as well. The 280Z stub axles fit in the 240Z as a direct swap, but you need to use the 280Z companion flange as well, as it's a large splined shaft. jeromio
Also, If the rear drums are retained, if the stub axle breaks there is a potential for the wheel to fall off. Rear discs should prevent this since the caliper would "lock" the wheel assembly in place.
