Oh man... was driving down the freeway to the beach with my g/f tonite, it was pretty empty so I finally decide I'm gonna let the turbo stretch her legs a little for the first time. I start giving it throttle (great part throttle boost repsonse on this one... Grainger valve rocks) I come up on nearly 100mph and suddenly all this shit starts flying around in the car!!! something like old dead leaves, and some newspaper bits, started coming in thru my vents!! Scared the shit outta me and my g/f, she started panicking, and I got some of that stuff in my eyes so of course I'm in a big hurry to slow down... craaaaaaaaaaazy. I've noticed little bits of this stuff before, accumalating on the floor, but it'd never just come blowing out of the vents like that, even when I've had the car well up past 100mph. The fan in my car doesn't even work, this was just from the force of the air.

How hard would it be to pull off all the heating ducts and clean all this crap out?? This sux... I'm not gonna be able to have any good fun if every time I hit 90+ a damn dust storm starts inside my car :(

It's not that hard to do. What I do is unscrew the black metal piece off the top of the dash (by the windshield) unscrew the center console, and the center control panel. Look up under the dash on the passenger side and unbolt the blower fan "box" and unplug the wiring going to it (don't forget about that vaccum line in the back of it) it should all come out in one unit. Then unbolt the dash and steering column and lean the dash foreward, this makes it easy to get to the vents-wiring-etc. It takes me about 30 minutes to get to this point (taking my time). You will be able to see inside of the center box that contains the a/c and heater cores through the triangular hole on the passenger side. This is for my 260 with 280 a/c and heat components under the dash. But I know the 240 is very similar with the exception of cables inmstead of vaccum lines, and the center control panel is a bit trickier to remove. I took apart my 70 240's interior, and it is set up almost exactly the same as my 260/280 stuff. Hope this helps.

Another thing that might help would be to take the grill off that is in front of the windshield (can't think of the name right now). Leaves can fall through the grill and lie hidden there until they want to come into your car.

Air for the heater is drawn/pushed into the car from a vant under there so if leaves fall in by the wiper motor they could find there way into your car.

Dp351zcar is talking about the cowl panel. I had forgotten to say something about that also. He is correct, there's a rectangular hole on the passengers side that flows air through to the heater blower housing assembly, you will see what I am talking about when you pull the unit. This will also be a GREAT time to replace all the foam seals in the entire a/c heater system. Go to lowes or home depot and get some foam that comes in sheets that has stickey on one side. Cut the foam to the size and shapes that you need, clean off the old brittle stuff THOROUGHLY and whipe down the areas with alcohol to ensure a good clean surface to stick to. This does wonders for airflow. You might also think about upgrading your heater blower fan motor while you have the blower box out of the car.

A shop vac is nice to get the leaves and crud out when you are cleaning the plastic vents and such. Also, make sure there is no mud/dirt/dust in there either--that crap will blow out once in a while too, and you really don't need it in your eyes... You can always clean everything out with soap and water, etc. Make sure things are dry and clean (clean first and foremost) since dirty & damp = mold & smelly. Ewww.
