Guest RunninOnEmpty
My dist. is due for rebuilding. I have already replaced the plastic bearing carrier and have the tools to make new bushings, but the air gap between the reluctor and the stator is .040" to .050" and irregular. Spec. is <.020". Relacing those plus the p/u coil and magnet will cost me ~$70.00 U.S. and I'd still be running with a 22 year old module. So, I'm thinking for a few more $$ I could replace the guts with a Crane XR700 or XR3000. Problem is, I can't find much info from ppl who have installed these. I've read the instructions on Crane's website. The p/u bracket inside the dist. looks "Mickey Mouse" but I can fab a better one if need be. Anybody have experience with these Crane units? Comments? Thanks, John
gramercyjam
I've had an XR700 for about 6 years in my '73. No problems at all. --John B '73 FP 240Z
Guest RunninOnEmpty
Thanks, I'm new to Z Cars and haven't heard anything about the Cranes. Their website is listing the XR700 for $98. Replacing my guts and using a G.M. module probably would cost the same. John
jkube
Ive installed an XR3000 into my 72 zcar. It was easy to install and to setup. The bracket does look mickey mouse at first, but I've had no problems whatsoever. Dont go with the XR700 cause it can only handle low output (1.4-1.6 ohms) 240z coils. It requires that the resistor balast stays in the electrical circuit. Buy the XR3000 cause it's designed to handle the higher voltage Blaster 2 coils and 280z coils. (.6-1.2 ohms)
Guest RunninOnEmpty
Thanks, I get paid Monday and will order the XR3000 from Crane's website. Just 115 bux and free shipping, but they soak Californians 7.75% sales tax - that sux. BTW, do you know if the spindle joining the dist. to the oil pump on an L28 can be removed through the top instead of pulling the oil pump? I need to advance the dist. a bit since even fully rotated clockwise I can't get 10* BTDC. I'm hoping I can lift up the spindle a little and rotate it a notch. gramercyjam
Just thought I'd post that I run the XR700 without a ballast resistor and an aftermarket performance coil. I know what the directions say, that you need the ballast resistor unless your coil has an internal resistor - the resistance on this coil I am using looks like it doesn't have an internal resistor though. And I was very leary of taking the ballast resistor out, because without one, coils just get too hot and die. But it runs with a much hotter spark without the ballast resistor than it does with. In fact, it run so good with out the ballast resisitor furture plans for a MSD ignition has moved down to the bottom of the priorities list for the car. I have been running it this way for 5 years without any problems and 2 of those years were daily 200 mile commutes. If it ever does die, I guess I'll go get the expensive race-car ignition. Until then, it has to be the only thing I ever got for a car that actually paid for it self many times over. --john B
Guest RunninOnEmpty
Thanks - good to know you've experienced outstanding reliability. I was concerned that the LED might go south and leave me stranded. Apparently that's of no concern. I ordered direct from Crane and hope to have it by the weekend.
