Guest polarity
Found lt1 for sale on ebay, says it's the complete motor, but it has a knock. Motor is within driving distance to pick up (so no shipping) and costs $500.. does this sound like a deal I should go for. Or is a rod knocking too much of a PITA to deal with? Guest Nic-Rebel450CA
Forgive my ignorance here, but is the LT1 aluminum block? (I THINK the LT1 is iron and the LS1 is aluminum). If it is aluminum, I would be cautious about a knock. I have heard most people (when contemplating a good engine purchase opportunity) say that they will consider an iron block with a knock but never consider an aluminum block with a knock. If it is iron then I would say that it would definitely be worth considering, but for $500 plus the new bottom end parts that you would probably want to get, would it still be a deal? Guest polarity
I'm not sure. The auction says its iron heads, but doesn't say about the block. I also have no clue about the price of the rebuild kit (the rebuild kit on the block I have is around $450.. So if the rebuild of this is even comparable it saves me money as this way I dont have to buy heads, intake, etc. Any more opinions on this. Auction ends in a few hours and has no bids
Guest Nic-Rebel450CA
This page has a little info: http://www.hpsalvage.com/lt1.htm According to that page, the Caprice (which I believe is the auction that you are looking at) could have been a 5.7 or 4.3. Might want to check on that before bidding.

Phantom
LT1 is iron block and, depending on the application, could be had with either aluminum or iron heads. THe LS1 has always been an aluminum block with aluminum heads.
Dan Juday
That sounds like a Caprice motor. The f-bodies had aluminum heads. If it were me I'd wait for a solid motor. Prices are coming down and the cost to repair/rebuild + $500 is no great deal IMHO. You can find good f-body 350 LT1's now for $1500. baddriver
The real price of rebuilding a motor is the machine work. The $450 rebuild kit is only the start. Boiling, magnafluxing, boring, honing, turning the crank, decking the block, etc. may be needed to fix the engine. All that can add up to the price of a new motor. If it's a low-cost conversion your looking for, I'd wait and get a running engine.
Guest Hudson's Hawk
Hey. Everything is repairable or replace able..How old is the engine...what year. How bad is the knock..
