ASA240Z
Does anyone have an idea to solve a smog problem? I just had my 240Z 72' get a major tune up at the Nissan dealer, and after that I could still visably see smog come out my exhust pipe? My car has 46,000 rebuilt, so I don't think the engine needs to be rebuilt. Is it the brand of gas I'm using (Cevron supreme)? Or is it somthing else? Please help. DavyZ
...I could still visably see smog come out my exhust pipe? My car has 46,000 rebuilt... Smog? Or smoke? Might be a carb adjustment. What is a tune-up besides plugs, wires, cap, rotor, timing, and fluids? Carb Adjustment! That would be my guess if they did everything else. It does not matter what brand of gas you run IMO. Guest Nic-Rebel450CA
What you see wont necessarily hurt you. A vehicle can actually still pass smog while burning oil! If you get your car checked and it does not pass then post a listing of the smog results and I can tell you what to do to fix it. BTW, are you actually trying to pass smog, or are you just trying to get the car to run cleaner? First you need to determine what it is that is coming out. One simple way is to take a piece of paper and put it right up to the tail pipe (be careful, heat does cause fire ) and let some of the emissions collect on the paper. Then take the paper, take a whiff of it. Oil and fuel should smell quite different. Then you get to try my favorite step Burn the paper. If it is oil, the flame will go out or continue to burn but it will be a much shorter flame. If it is gas then it will burn faster, and may even crackle a little. Oil emissions would be from seals and such, gas emissions would be from a rich carb, or poor spark, or insufficient air. Another thing to keep in mind is that the stuff that you are emitting may not be new, this may be crud that accumulated in the exhaust system before the tune up. Your car may be running better now and producing enough exhaust pressure to blow the crud out. Take it for a ride down the freeway at a high rpm for a nice long stretch if the stuff coming out of the exhaust is more of a solid than a liquid. BTW, I dont think it is possible to build up a 240 engine enough to need supreme. There is no need for that high of octane and you are probably actually hurting your performance. Contrary to popular belief, the only difference in the grades is the octane content. If you use too high of octane you get incomplete burn and this causes deposits and cruddy stuff coming out the exhaust.... oh wait... that sounds familiar
ASA240Z
Well, what I see is smoke coming out of my car when I raise the rpms to about 5,000 rpms. All I want is my car to run cleaner so I won't smell like smog right after driving my car. Thanks for the help.
JoeinCA
hello! I hate to nit pick... but what exactly does "smog" smell like? Is the smoke coming from your exaust white, black, or bluish? If it is white, then you are burning water/coolant, black smoke means that it is running rich, and bluish smoke means that you are burning oil. also, You do not want to run high octane fuel in an engine that does not require it. Octane is basically a measure of the fuel's resistance to detonation, which means that the fuel ignites at a higher temperature/compression. good luck man, Joe
