Whoopie!!! First test fit

Recommended Posts

I remember thinking the same thing about my 280ZX..."wow there sure is a lot of room in there, heck I might be able to get headers on there even" Yeah right headers! I can get a standard block hugger on the passenger side but I have to fabricate my own on the drivers side due to the large gear box that sits right in front of the 2 center exhaust ports! :x

Just wait till you get all the manifolds and the fan and radiator and all the extra little things in there. Then you will see how much "extra" room really is in there! :D

So when are you going to post some pictures? :D

Since I have yet to find a car to use for my LT1 swap, I'm considering going with a Z31 or Z32 since theres quiet a bit more of those around here than the earlier years.

Chaparral2f & SteveR - How are you planning on mounting your LT1's? Setback or Scarab style? This is my main concern, I want the setback position for the weight balance but was wondering how much more fabrication is needed compared to the S30.

Smooth Operator, where in Bama are you? maybe I can show you mine, it's nothing special and far from done, but you can probably get some ideas from it.

Everything will have to be custom, no kits for the Z31. And there really isn't a "setback" position. There really isn't THAT much room to work with, certainly not in the same respects as the older Zs. So, as far back as you can get it is what you'll be doing anyways.

Hey Dr.buddha, shoot me some pics 300z@livethenow.com It's always nice to see other people's work. And more insight on my own project is always helpful. :-D

Dr Buddha, Welcome to Hybrid Z. Its good to know that there's another z31 here, there aren't manyof us :-D . Post some pics I'd love to see them!!

I have a lot of room, because I lost a lot of the stuff that I didn't need. (Cruise control, engine wiring harness, Fan shroud, etc.) plus I moved the battery to the back lost the clutch. I'm welding up all the screw holes in the fender wells.

I think I'm going to take the mounts off the crosmember and turn them around so they are further forward. My engine may have to sit a little bit forward since the wires come out of the back of the Magneto. Looks like the most expensive thing left to do is the exhaust system. I may have it dump in front of the rear wheels. Do you have cooling problems? What did you do for a radiator? Oh, one more thing . Will the stock z fuel pump supply enough gas for a 350?

ok the deal on your radiator is you need a stock z31 turbo radiator when you mont it in the stock position you might need to ajust it just a littel.ni the fuke pump will not suply your 350 small block.i just cut the wierrs to the pump and added a holly eletric full pump to it.

if you want a good runing exsast run dual it is posibed. mine has a h pipe syestem with 2 (12) inc. glass pacs and 5 inch crome tips.it comes out behind rear wheels.do not put the einge all the way forwerd you will have probles wit mounting your radiator.if you need i will send pics or i will try to post them for you. ask anything you need.

I live near West Blocton, probably about 60 miles from Birmingham.

Right now its just finding a body to put an LT1 in. I like all the Z's pretty much except for the big fat 280ZX2+2's. Chances are I'll have to use a Z31 or Z32 which there are more of around here than 240-280z's though I'd rather have something old for the insurance savings. Im more into road racing than drag racing so the weight balance is my main concern. The fabrication won't be too big of a problem I think. If things go good Ill be using EFI so hood clearance hopefully wont be much of a prob either.

Thanks for the info. I'm have an electric water pump, and there seems to be quite a bit of room around it. I will be setting the engine back as far as I can to keep the weight dist as close as I can. I'll get an aftermarket fuel pump. I've been thinking about it anyway because I have Kinser stack injection taking up shelf space while I do research on using it. As for the hood clearance I am running a Vertex mag and the velocity stacks on the injection are pretty tall so I am going to a cowl induction hood.
