Hopefully an easy SBC 350 Timing Question???

Greetings,

I hope this is just a brain-fart. :?

I'm finally getting around to starting my Hybrid after a few months of sitting. I put new cast iron Vortec heads/1.6 roller rockers/small cam 214/224 in/ex at .050". The heads were machined and should be able to handle about .580" of lift now.

Thought I had all timing marks lined up but went to start the car it backfired through the TBI (holley-projection).

Did I mis the distibutor by 180 degrees or mis the timing by 1 tooth? Is there an easy way to tell without pulling the distibutor and putting it in 180 out?

I'm charging the battery now and wanted to get it right before I fire her up again.

Thanks for the help.

Turn the crank with a wrench until piston one is at TDC and pull the distro cap off and make sure the rotor is pointing at the correct spark plug.

Also, if it is 180 out, you will here a sound through your exhaust that sounds like some weird factory machine popping, burping, and puffing at random tones and intervals.

Yup, sounds like 180 out to me. My RX7 V8 conversion did that when I fired it up the first time. It was cool.. backfiring out both sides of the car.. Ba BANG! (left) BA BANG (right).. and so on, then 4 feet of flames out of the carb.. wow.. only took 2 min's to fix, so it's easy to laugh about!
