ok i just got my motor for my third v8 z project. it is a small block 400 bored 60 over and should be picking up from the shop in a few days. i am finishing up the last couple things to finish the motor. any of you with some know how on these motors please give me some clues on which type's of pistons to use and if the extra money in performance push rods and lifters and springs is worth it or not. i know the shop wants to sell the good stuff but i would like your thoughts on it. it is a 99 block 4 bolt with the single piece rear main so will an early 90's t5 work on that or do i have to go newer. also if i have to go newer will a t5 even hold up to the 450 to 500 foot lbs of torque. if not whats some suggestions (t56) thanks zach.

also how easy is it to put a 9 inch rear in or is it possible that there is a stronger rear than the r200 made by nissan. on top of that i was told the early z's (70 and 71) rear ends are held by the mustache bar differently then the following 73 z's and so on. is this true or can an r200 be mounted easily into the 71 from a late 70s or early 80's 280zx . thanks.

i hate to be the bearer of bad news but thats not a 400. if its a one piese rear main and 4 bolt its going to be a 87' and up model block. gm stopped making 400's around the late 70's. as far as what it is exactly the only way to know is by checking the casting #'s. BEFORE you start sinking a lot of $$$$$ in it find out what you have. it would be a shame to to buy parts that don't fit. twak.gif

Yeah, Bio's right, I don't think they ever made a 4 bolt main 400 at all. One piece main definitely suggest 87 and up and if its a 1999 its likely a vortec 350 block (truck basically). Not an issue, but as mentioned just make sure you get the right parts. IMHO the 350 is a better block anyway, but thats a personal opinion.

ok i got the right specs. it was a 1976 block 4 bolt main bored 60 over. now my next question is whould one think a 350 is really better and why. should i go ahead and rebuild the 350 in the garage over the 400 for reliability or something. can the 350 give me the same power????? thanks

Go with the 400 and be prepared for possible overheating problems if your cooling system proves inadequete. More Cubic inches than a 350.
