Guest datsun75
Okay, Here's my situation on my chevy 350sb so far. I am using a 2 gallon gas can and running my fuel line into that to give the car fuel. I gapped all my sparkplugs at .040 sparkplugwires are secure. All Vacuum lines on carb and manifold are closed off except for advance to distributor. The motor is rebuilt with a holley 600cfm carb brand new sitting for a year in weather covered best as possible. I here my fuel pump shut off when the car dies out from the oil pressure switch working. I prime the motor by hand since gas pedal linkage is not hooked up yet. Start the motor it starts up and revs high for 5-6 seconds and sounds smooth loud and great but just dies out after it burns off primed gas I'm guessing. What is going wrong here people? Can anybody give me some tips or ideas. I want to get this car to idle for me. It's so close. It's got to be something stupid! I know. I tried dropping a wrench on the float bowl. Ideas would be really helpful.
Guest Nic-Rebel450CA
when it dies, does it sputter or chug and die or does it just immediately cut out?
Guest datsun75
It just dies really nice and smooth like no more fuel. The motor sounds like a top when it runs. No sputtering or backfiring. I am hearing a whislting sound and wondering if thats a vacuum leak somewhere between a gasket or something.
denny411
Are you positive that your fuel pump is flowing in the correct direction?
Guest datsun75
I have a clear fuel filter next to the carb and its half full at all times. I just adjusted the fuel pressure down to 7.5 psi from 10psi. It still doesnt idle. I was flipping the back to butterflies and when they are worked I see no fuel coming from the back two primaries. Does this tell us anything? I dont have any vacuum to the transmission. I just have that blocked for now. I tightened the carb to the intake better too. Will the fuel still come up if the pump is hooked up backwards???
Guest Nic-Rebel450CA
Even if the fuel pump was off, as long as the bowls are filled it will run for a lot longer than 5 or 6 seconds. I'd try spraying a lil starter fluid around the carb and see if the revs increase. This is a way to tell if there is a vacuum leak. BE CAREFUL THOUGH! Obviously the stuff is flamable and you want to avoid sources of ignition. I would imagine you could probably mist the carb with water instead and see if it chokes the revs down at all. Guest datsun75
I have one arm in the door turning the key and by the time i get to the carb to goose the idle, it revs out really high and dies what a shame. If I fan it, it will run loud and scare me thinking this new motor is going to fly to pieces on me with the short pipes I have welded. If I spray the carb cleaner in the carb it will stay running but very high rpms.
Guest datsun75
FOUND THE PROBLEM and FIXED! YIPPEE The washers that go on before the nuts on the four post of the carburator were not where they should have been. They were below the carb separating it from sealing off on the intake manifold. I have no idea how they got there? But I did tell you it was probably something stupid. So I took the carb off and then the washers. Put the washers where they go and now the motor has been broken in and runs (idles) Very very excellent! Much Thanks on the help you all. I am a happy camper! Guest Nic-Rebel450CA
did you get a new gasket to go between the manifold and carb base? With that vacuum leak, any gasket that was there would have been exposed to a lot of air.
Guest datsun75
I used the gasket that came with the carb. It looked in fine shape still since it hasnt seen much activity until now. What would the air do to it?
Guest Nic-Rebel450CA
Air can harden it, and the starting fluid could deteriorate it. If a gasket is exposed to airflow, it is generally considered a good idea to replace it then, to avoid it blowing out in the future.
