383 240z
I'm not sure what fourum to post this in ( I'm sure the moderater will move it if this is the wrong one ) Im trying to put a SBC into my 87 rx-7 for less than the cost of a 200HP rotor motor. Do you guys know of a company that makes a good kit? I've heard of gearbox grannys but have not heard many goodthings about them on the net. Have any of you delt with them? I would hate to get burned as the kit aint cheap!! Keith

383 240z
Bio that is great news I was wondering what year car 1st gen or 2nd gen? Did you get the basic kit or the more complete one? Keith
Guest plainswolf
"anything can be made to fit" as the saying goes. However as former owner of a 1st, and 2nd gen RX-7, there is precious little room between the front axle and the firewall. Your 13B is a very short motor. If you make a SBC to fit, it will hang over your front axle.

biohzrd
the car was an 87' gtu model i think. in any case it was a 2nd gen car. believe it or not the car weighs less then it did befor. as far as the room in the engine bay goes there is more then enough to fit it in. as a result the car has a perfect 50/50 weight ratio and runs the quarter in the 11 teens. 383 240z
Hey zman I have been talking to Ian about there "kit" it would work but I would need to wait almost 3 weeks to get a set of mounts and his sets the motor to far forward for me to use the stock rad. But those first gen rex's sure do look cool!!!! I'm really trying to find a good recommendation about the gearbox granny kit. Keith

Scottie-GNZ
Hey Keith, there was an 87 RX-7 with a SBC at the track last night. He had 275/60-15 BFG DRs and there was not an inch of clearance but I did not see or hear any signs of it rubbing. he is still running the stock 4.10 with a TH350 and would roll itoff the line and nail. Not good for quick 60' and was getting 2.0s. Not sure of the details of the engine but he was spraying (how much?). He ran 12.46 @ 114+ and says his best his 11.91. Nice looking car and a well done swap.
Guest Anonymous
You might be better off with a high performance V6 instead of a V8. Length of the motor is the biggest concern in making an engine fit in the RX-7 because of the steering rack. You could try a Buick GN engine or a Ford Taurus SHO motor (220hp). Even a late model Camaro 3.8L V6 would do ok.
Guest 240Zduz10s
if you dont want to do a chevy 350 .. you could always do a ford 302 its quite a bit smaller and still makes good power.. i cant decide between the two with my first gen rx7.. if you do the swap keep us updated..
