Guest j0sh
Ok, I know this guy who lives the 130 miles away from me. He is like a Z god, and he has this car for sale. Its a 240 (body in bad cond.) and it has a really nice chevy 350 in it. it also has the turbo 350 auto tranny. I have a 1973 240z in good condition right now, but the motor is worn out. I was wondering if I should take up this opportunity while it lasts, and how difficult it would be to take the guts out of the one i buy and put them in the one i have now. The guy wants to sell this car complete for $4500. thankz for the advice oh yea, i will be able to have the help of an expirenced (like 40 yrs.) mechanic
dsommer
I'd pass... If you have a good 240 that you want to convert, buy a low buck crate engine//JTR mounting kit//source a tranny and put it in. $4500 for a "rough" bodied Z with a 350 is not a deal. I found one similar to what you're describing for $2500 around here. ds
Sumo
PASS.. what dsommer said, there have been deals here for $4500 that are not complete and have nice bodies or need a little more TLC to have it running. Look around some more. 8)
RPMS
Unless it's a really BUILT 350 and has 1/4 mile slips in the 10-11 second range to prove it, it's a bad deal. For that kind of money, you'd be stupid (there, I said it) not to get a complete crate motor, injection setup, and tranny. The rest of the stuff necessary to convert is chickenfeed compared to the cost of the motor, and what you're getting does not sound like a good deal. PASS. Guest j0sh
Ok, here is what I would get pretty much, pre 1970 unbored high nickel 350 (complete and built up) i think its in the 350-400 hp range. Plus a turbo 350 tranny. I get the whole car, but the car itself is in bad shape. The motor is in really good condition.
ToplessZ
for 4500 dollars you can have a 500 hp 383 and a built 700r4 if you play your cards right and do alot of deal shopping youll still have money left over
fl327
doesnt hurt for the guy to ask, i think he just put that out there to see what would happen. have the mechanic check it out with you, and make him a fair offer based on mechanical condition and poor body condition, it wouldnt hurt. Guest j0sh
Ok, here is what I think I will do. I was looking at crate motors and I think im gunna go with the 383 stroker. I found one good for like 475 HP with a T-350(built) tranny for about $3,700. I added up what I would need from JTR and it came to like $875. $4575 total without shipping and the JTR manual. Not to shabby considering I will get more power and I wont have to have a old rusty beat up 240z rolling chassis rotting in my back yard. I think I will go with all your guys' advice and stay away from that car. Thankz alot guys
ToplessZ
Keep shopping you never know what you might find. I would also consider a 200r4 or 700r4 if you plan on doing any street driving that way you will have an overdrive.
Guest j0sh
Keep shopping you never know what you might find. I would also consider a 200r4 or 700r4 if you plan on doing any street driving that way you will have an overdrive. I havn't heard many good things about the 700-R4 tranny, and I would like somthing bigger and more sturdy than the 200-R4. I think I'm just gunna go with the T-350 even tho it dosn't have over-drive. Ive droven in many cars/trucks with the T-350 and I think it will do just fine for what I need, my car wont be driven on the freeway or anything just mostly stop light to stop light if u know what I mean
Guest j0sh
Oh yea, one more thing what diff would you guys reccomend. I heard the r200's are good, but what type of gears should I get? I was thinking 4.11 but I don't really want to guzzle gas like that. I want somthing geared for acelleration, not really top speed since I dont have many aero parts or a g-nose convert. I just want to eat all the riced out cars around here for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and an occasional midnight snack. (on the track)
jonzer12
You can't really pick a rear end until you know your motor/tranny setup, its important that the two compliment each other. Leave the rear end till the end.
