Guest G-nose240z
I BIT THE BULLET AND DECIDED TO TRY OUT THE MSD 6AL ON MY 240Z WITH A N42 BLOCK AND E88 HEAD BORED .30 OVER WITH A LUMPY CAM AND TWIN 2" ROVER SU CARBS. THE DIZZY IS FROM A 280ZX WITH AN ACCEL SUPER STOCK COIL. THE 2" SU'S REALLY SUCK BACK THE GAS AND I HOPE THE MSD CAN KEEP UP THE PACE OVER 5,000 RPM. THE CAR IS BUILT FOR AUTOCROSS. MY QUESTION IS HOW TO WIRE THE DIZZY (2 WIRES) TO THE RED (12 VOLT) LINE. ARE BOTH DIZZY WIRES ATTACHED TO THE RED FROM THE MSD SYSTEM? THANKS,
Guest bastaad525
Here is a link to a writeup I did at Zcar.com on how to hook up the MSD 6A in a 240 with ZX dizzy. However, I was never able to figure out how to get the stock 240 tach to work, and after asking many times on both this forum and zcar, no one was able to provide a solution to me. A few suggestions were made but none worked, and a few fried parts! Apparently the early 240 tachs are wired in some super weird funky way, unlike any other tach, it does NOT feed off the coil negative. So if you wire it this way you will need a tach... autometer or whatever. Anyways here's the link: http://www.zcar.com/forums/read.php?f=1&i=287734&t=287734 It's pretty easy... gotta bypass and remove the module on the side of the dizzy... I found this out accidentally after one of the attempts to get the tach working fried the module I could not get it to work with the module hooked up. The two wires that come from inside the dizzy and plug into the 'back' of the module are what you need.
Guest G-nose240z
interesting about the stock tach. thankfully, i got rid of it last year and i run the 5"monster tach from autometer. i have wired it directly into the msd box as instructed. i will double check removing the module off the dizzy. thanks for the tip. no point frying this up. i am puzzled now about where to connect the small red wire to the ignition/key/cylinder. i guess it should hook up to some black wire in there? instructions say nothing about that last step. Guest bastaad525
dude trust me... just remove the module no matter how I tried I could not get it to work with the MSD... after pulling it off I ran the car for a year with no problems. I advise you to use some silicone to fill up the hole in the dizzy body that the module covers, otherwise lots of dirt will build up in there. About the little red wire, if you are referring to the 12v key on source, the one that is paired up with the small white wire coming out of the MSD, I connected that to the wire that originally went to the coils positive terminal when stock (black w/white stripe on my car). You can always find another key on source but why not use that one, now that it is all freed up? I also power my autometer tach from this wire, and have run the car for quite some time that way w/o issue.
Guest Birkl240Z
It worked fine for me to connect the white wire to C on the ign module. And the B terminal is feed by B/W wire (prevusly + terminal at coil) the red wire to MSD is also feed by B/W. It fired up directly. and idled at 400rpm My parts list in the 240z: MSD 6A 6200 MSD Tach adapter 8610 MSD Blaster coil 2 8200 distributor from a 280zx -82 Tach - stock 240Z -73 pic 1 http://birkl.tripod.com/datsun_img/msd_zx_240z_1.jpg Im going to try your setup with magnetic pickup. but im not sure how to connect the tach adaptor. have some ideas see pic below, I will post that later... pic 2 http://birkl.tripod.com/datsun_img/msd_zx_240z_2.jpg
datsunlover
Well.. I don't know if this is feasible for you, but I just used the 280zx dizzy/stock black box. SIMPLE to wire up, and seams reliable.. I have an MSD box I picked up that I was GOING to use, but decided to just try the stock 280zx dizzy by itself... just a thought.
