LT1 fuel system set up for a 1980 280ZX???

Recommended Posts

What do I have to do to my fuel system to make a 93 LT1 engine work in my car?

Do I have to put in new bigger lines and new fuel pump or is the ZX pump strong enough? I am planning on a little over 400HP at the crank for a power goal.

Thanks Guy G.

I'm not much of an expert here but I'll tell you what I did. Don't know if it's the easiest way but its working well. I installed a '97 Z28 fuel tank in my '73 240Z. I had to remove my spare tire well and cover w/ sheetmetal, make ribs from 3/4 box tubing and turn the tank around backwards. The biggest prob was running the filler neck thru the original hole (PITA). I had to cut off the orig neck and weld 2" pipe at a wierd angle and attach back w' 2" poly tubing. I used the orig 5/16 supply line as my return and ran 3/8 line for the new supply. The best thing is the fuel tank already has the high pressure pump and GM level sender in it. My setup is TPI but the press required is the same. Been driving it a couple of weeks and the fuel sys is perfect (factory quiet and all the press I'll need). I have some part #'s I can find for fuel filter and adapter hose if you go that route. Hope this helps. Good Luck

80LT1, yes the stock fuel pump and lines will work, they worked on my 73 with 93 lt-1 for several years. You need to make a small auxillary tank, no more than a pint and feed this tank with an extra low pressure pump. Then have the small tank feed your high pressure pump. This is covered in one of the JTR books. I think it is in the TPI swap book. Mark

Heres a picture of that setup from www.sdsefi.com (simple digital systems) :

On the other hand the ZX is already fuel injected right (so the above isn't necessary for you IMHO)? You could always just unhook the one Nissan used and put in a stronger inline one back by the stock fuel tank, the fuel injected car's lines should be a bit bigger than early Z's right?

Lone is on to something. Is the pump in your car an intank pump or does your tank have baffels to prevent fuel starvation and an external pump? I ran a 280-z fuel pump and stock lines on a stock lt-1 with out problems so your set up will probably work with out much modification.

The pumps on ZX's are external and are intended for high pressure EFI, so It shoud be suitable as is. The fuel tanks do have baffels to prevent starvation.

That should do it. Just make sure that you use good quality lines and sound techniques to do that. High pressure fuel spraying around in the engine compartment can make that a very memorable day in your life. I KNOW!

Russell makes 37 degree AN fittings that are meant to plug into the fuel rail for connection to braided hose.
