I've got a '72 with a turbo motor in it... I'm okay with a set of tools, and do a lot of work on it myself. Swapping out parts like starter/alternator/water pump etc. are no problem for me to handle. Bigger jobs, mostly including stuff that requires the car to be lifted, or big jobs like engine or tranny removal are beyond my means... There are a few reasons for this, mostly a lack of proper tools for the bigger jobs, lack of experience on some of the more detail oriented jobs, and a lack of a good place to work (I live in an apartment and the manager isn't too crazy about me, say, pulling an engine in our parking lot.)

I've had one guy doing all the big stuff on my Z for like 7 years now but he's recently started to be not so reliable... taking my car to a shop, on the other hand, is really not an option... I just can't afford it. And in the meantime my car is doing more sitting than driving...

So... if there's anyone here that loves working on Z's, knows what they're doing, has a driveway or garage they can work in, wouldn't mind making some extra money every now and again, and will save me money over a shop, let me know :)

Right now I'm looking specifically for someone that can remove and replace my oil pan and pan gasket.... The damn thing was leaking so I payed my above mentioned guy to put a new gasket, and got the car back it was leaking 3x as bad. Apparently he felt the pan wasn't straight and decided to straighten it by beating on it with a hammer  I've got another pan and gasket already but this job is beyond me right now. If you're interested let me know, and shoot a price my way too. Also let me know what area you live in... I'm in Northridge... With the luck I've been having with this car lately... thing is always in need of SOMETHING being fixed that I just can't do myself... anyone interested pm me.

If you can wait until the weekend, I'll help you out....NC.

You know, I've never used a gasket on a L6 oil pan. I've pulled and replaced about 5 or 6 of them and NEVER had a leak on any of them....just food for thought.

Tim240z - okay you've got my attention... what do you use to seal it? Just using silicone in between? I've already bought a felpro pan gasket, but it only ran me $6, if you think I can get by fine w/o using it it's no big loss. To be honest I'm kinda skeptical of felpro stuff right now as it is, but that was they had. The weekend would be fine, how early are you up in the mornings? I work the graveyard shift, get off at 7am on saturday and 9am on sunday... could just head straight out to your place after that if not too early. Will be VERY cool to get to see the finished mongoose :)

Also, Tim, when you pull the oil pan, which way do you do it? Do you lift the engine up or move the bar that's in the way (control arm or sway bar or whatever it is)?

DavD3 - yeah the guy I deal with is in glendale. I dont really want to talk bad about the guy... for a very long time I had had no problems with his work... he always gave me a great price and did good work, in a timely manner. He's also always given me good prices on parts, and if I had any problems with anything I bought from him he'd always quickly rectify the situation. I think he's just getting tired of working on cars in general... and on top of that there's been a string of bad luck with my car in particular so he's not to happy when I come around. I only started having problems when he swapped a turbo motor into my car... Anyways, lately he hasn't been doing the work himself, rather, he pays some OTHER guy to do it... but every time he has this other guy do work on my car I have some kinda bad experience with it. This other guy just doesn't really have any respect for my car, and he's the one that decided to 'fix' my oil pan, but actually made it worse... when he could have easily just mentioned that the pan was warped and could have replaced it with a good one, considering there are like three friggin spares between me and my friend. Not to mention he scuffed the hell out of my 2 month old paint job... I think after this last thing he did my friend may not be working with him anymore, or so he tells me. Just curious, what are you looking to have him do? Another problem now is that he's also have problems with HIS landlord and is getting to a point where he can't work on cars at his house anymore. Anyways if he's doing the work himself I say go for it... but please do me a favor and try to find out from him in a way that wont make it glaringly obvious that someone (me) told you about this other guy... I dont wanna have the guy pissed off at me for losing him a customer, as he is still a good source for parts for me.

I won't mention anything from this board to him, period. I'm not able to do fixing to my car in the area where i live.In case you are wondering i need to change bushings in control arms front and rear, transmission, shocks/springs and rear end( going to lower gear )So maybe it's one day job for some shop, but i definetly don't have tools and place to do it on my own.Car is not my daily driver, just weekend fun,so it's not really emergency for me.Thanks anyway.

I dunno I may just do it your way... I'm still kinda iffy about felpro stuff... I haven't taken the gasket out of the box yet so I dont know what kinda material it is or whatever. I guess when I bring it down you can take a look at it and tell me what you think. All I know is that every time I've ever used felpro valve cover gaskets they ALWAYS leak.

So Tim... just curious... lifting the engine up or moving the suspension component out of the way?
