i know that this subject has been beat up to death and i have done search but i think that there is something wrong with search function. this is my question. can i section 240z struts about two inches and if i can which sturts should i order. i have read about some vw and mr2 but i am not sure if that was only for 280's. any sugestions is more that welcome.

Thanks

dude this is where i had my problems.. sectioning your struts all depend on your tire/wheel combo also.

if you have tall wheels like i do then you cant take off much as the car will soon hit the tires, even more so if you hit a bump or etc.

you need proper suspension travel.

do you really need to lower your car much? maybe just some coilovers, like a 8inch spring or 10inch spring.

i sectioned mine and i know doubt i had to..

well im sure you can section them abit but just do alot of measuring before you cut.. as i didnt and i have problems.

i know on my other Z with the small 15inch wheel/tire combo i can section abit more.

Mike,

my wheels are taller then yours (18's) and in the back its just fine plenty of strut travel but its the front that i dont like there is barelly like 3-4 inches of travel and my car is bareally lowered down (had it next to stock 78 280z) so i would really like to get about two more inches of travel for the front. you see where i am going with this?

ps. my front spring rate is front #150 back #175

ya i know what you mean.

thing is i dunno if you can lower it.. because of the wheels and tires..

i could VERY well be wrong but the tall tires will always have your car higher then normal.

am i going the wrong way with this? am i even on the same page as you lol.

Well Im ready to join the dumb gang here. I am following this post. would it be that much effort to just install the coil overs with a 10 in spring and see where it sits without sectioning then if you still need to go lower then take them off and have them sectioned.

I recently joined the CO club...adjustable mr2 inserts (#Tokico BZ3099) in every corner

( approx 1 1/4" spacers in the rear) with 10 inch 200F and 225R.

The Z has a way to go before I'm turning the key, but I easily drift off into day dreams every time I look at it.

I can't over emphasize the importance of re-checking everything before you cut or weld.

You will save yourself from much aggravation, Trust Me.

Working on your Z is supposed to be fun.

Thanks Ivan,

Your question is really going to depend on the location of the lower spring stops/perch...

Is anyone on the list running coil-over springs, shorted housings and utilizing the stock spring perch? Compare this against the same w/unmodified strut housings (spring seat locations being the same).

I feel that my stops/spring perch location is currently lower then what I will probably end up with, so I would rather not comment on current amount of travel.

I don't know If this helped?

pm'ed few of our suspension guru's and i got what i was looking for. for the front i need mr2 struts (#Tokico BZ3099 ) and for the back use 240z front struts. now that wasn't so bad .

I have this exact same set up on my '73 with 280 struts. The wheels are 15x7's. I'm very happy with the amount of suspension travel and the ride height is nice and low. The coil overs are Ground Control. Even with the 280 struts, I went off GC's 240 perch measurements, and it came out perfect. With the coil overs in the middle, there's still enough room for a larger diameter wheel.

Even if you have to run bump steer spacers, what's the big deal?
