Kevin Shasteen
Has anyone seen this site: http://www.vorshlag.com/ls1bmw1.asp I came across it while looking for data on the LS1 engine. Pretty sweet once he finishes it. He plans on making a kit once completed. Unfortunately it appears just like the rest of us-their work schedule keeps getting in the way of their progress. Just think about it, having a stable of LS1 steeds in the garage...an LS1 Z for the weekend warrior as a sleeper and the LS1 BMW also as a sleeper and snob appeal. The biggest question would be, "which one to choose as your daily driver"? Kevin, (Yea,Still an Inliner)

Kevin Shasteen
Since they are only 2800lbs I would say w/the LS1-the biggest problem, just like the V8Z's, will be that they are traction limited. Suspension mods and a larger tire footprint are definately required. Kevin, (Yea,Still an Inliner)

Jay1970Z
Hey I actually found that site months ago and posted it here but I guess nobody paid attention... http://www.hybridz.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=26500&highlight= Anyway heres another another BMW hybrid I came across a while ago, this time its Lexus powered, and unlike the LS1 one, it's up and running. http://www.autospeed.com/A_1583/page1.html I have a '94 325i myself with about 120k on it and its been having lots of minor problems lately so I am very interested in hearing more about this myself. It would make a hell of a sleeper and you could have an M5 killer on your hands for a lot cheaper than the real thing.
silicone boy
These are the same crazies that were trying to put an LS1 into a first generation Miata a while back. I wonder how they are coming along with that? They had to chop up the firewall a bit, but with a grinder and a welder, you can do almost anything. I know there's the Monster Miata with the 5.0, but I'm just not Ford saavy (though I have nothing against the blue oval)
Kevin Shasteen
.., I have a '94 325i myself with about 120k on it and its been having lots of minor problems lately so I am very interested in hearing more about this myself.., Jay, I have no experience w/the BMW's but this swap also intrigues me as well. Out of curiosity-would you mind offering some insight as to what kind of "little problems" have been popping up on your car...or, better yet: what are some things to look out say if a guy were to begin looking for a used 3 series BMW. FWIW, I dont think these guys are gonna finish the LS1 BMW anytime soon-they started 9 months ago...blasted work schedules Anyway, any insight to inherent problems on the 3 series BMW would certainly be appreciated. Jay1970Z
All in all, over the years its been a very reliable car. The main problem I've had is that 3 times, the fan has broken apart and torn up the radiator and/or hoses pretty bad...not exactly a little problem. This last time though I had a set of relatively new belts break apart on me on the highway (I noticed a fan blade missing once again but couldn't determine if that was the actual cause). Luckily the radiator survived this time. Each time it happened it was about 3 or 4 years apart and after the second time I was willing to write it off as a freak accident but now I don't know. The main little things that are driving me crazy involve the computer control center thing that tells you if anythings wrong. Its always telling me I have brake lights out and that my lights aren't working but they clearly are. Also, one of the power seats is acting up. Another thing is the car has developed an incredibly annoying exhaust note and I can't figure out exactly why considering the entire exhaust system is perfectly intact. Most these problems seem to be on my car only, I've looked at many BMW forums and what not and not seen the same thing on other peoples 3-series. The main problem lots have is that the plastic impellers on the water pump come apart after a while, but it can be replaced with one with metal impellers I believe. Overall I would probably recommend the E36 3-series since for the most part its given me reliable transporation for the last 10 years and its still running strong after 120k miles. Pretty decent performance out of the 190 hp 2.5L and decent handling to match too.
Kevin Shasteen
Good to hear; so most of those problems would disappear with the LS1 swap I also like the look of the 5 series-it certainly wouldn't hurt if it received an LS1 V8. blueovalz
So there really is life for the old Bimmer. Thank god. My 325 is the best driver I've ever owned, but the power is not up to what I'd like. Perhaps in the next decade, if we still are burning gasoline for transportation, I can try this.
