Kinked_Chrome
I was thinking of turbocharging my LT1 Z. This is really only an idea, not likely to happen (but that's what i thought about an lt1 in a Z ). I'm not worried about piping, fuel, ign, etc. at this point, I just want to know how much power a bone stock lt1 can handle reliable, before i start melting holes in pistings, pinging, or whatever. Scottie-GNZ
It is hard to put a specific HP number to your question. You make as much as you can until you start detonating. How much that is depends on how efficient your add-ons are. These include the I/C, fuel system (injs, pump, FPR, etc), ignition control (absolutely critical that you have a way to retard timing as boost increases), and the quality of the fuel you use. Higher octane will allow you to make more power safely. Running high octane is expensive, so an alternative is adding an alcohol-injection system. Evan Purple240zt
Scottie, rumor has it Jay Carter has a propane injection kit in the works as well. I took what you said to heart about possible bad gas in a turbo motor, so i will probabally do propane injection as insurance. The kits not released yet, but should be soon, he discontinued the alchy kits. Evan
grumpyvette
look this over, http://www.vtr.org/maintain/gasoline-octane.html http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/misc/octanebooster.html think intercooler and LOTS of Toulene/Xylene/methonol added to the fuel, face it turbos make super power but they also cost ALOT to install and FEED, with the correct fuel blend youll be able to get enough hp out of that stock bottom end to stretch bolts and spin bearings way before you melt pistons http://www.turbofast.com.au/TFcompB.html
Guest Anonymous
Its a tough call...I know personally of two stock LT1s that had Vortech s -trim blowers installed (about 6 lbs boost)...one lasted 40k miles until the owner sold the car (kept the blower), the other broke the top edges of the pistons three days after installation. The pistons in an LT1 are very weak, so keep his in mind, and be prepared to build a new bottom end if you go this route.
Guest Anonymous
if you go with a supercharger definetly do with a procharger there so much better than vortech my 2 cents
Kinked_Chrome
I don't want to build a super high HP turbo and have to run high octane fuel (might be cool, but not for me). I'm just looking to pump up my lt1 a little bit, with out a buying a SC kit or building a stroker. I buddy of mine put together a turbo kit for his TPI for relatively cheap. The catch is that his TPI was built tough and could handle pretty much anything he throw's at it. I'm looking to boost mine about 6-10 (or more if I can) with an I/C and upgraded Fuel, PCM, etc. I just want to know if the bottom end can handle it to drive the car daily, or if I should look into building it tougher.
