Exhaust clearance again (yet)

Recommended Posts

I am having exhaust clearance problems on my chevy/z31. The left hand header dumps about three inches from the top of the snout on the steering rack. Money is too tight to buy another new set of headers, I have been thinking about is changing the steering rack. The stock one is 19' from boot to boot, and I have been looking for one that is 23" The closest I have come is one from an RX7 it is 21" boot to boot, but it is manual.

ther is good news and bad news as they say, The good news is that I woulld loose the weight of the power steering, and the bad news is that I wouldn't have power steering . Any opinions?

Another thought is to lower the stock rack and cut and weld an offset into the tie rods. I have even considered moving the stock rack to the left and installing a long tie rod on the right side and a shorter one on the left.

Changing steering racks isn't something I'd undertake lightly... If only because I'm uncertain of all the effects it might have on steering geometry.

I do believe one does run the risk of inducing bump steer in quantity, depending on how much the arcs traced by the tie rod ends change.

Is there any way you can modify your header? Depending on what else is around, 3" + Mods might be enough room to add an elbow and avoid the current steering setup.
