Ferd/289
Anyone know how to back down the spring lever belt tensioner? to get serpentine fan belt off. Does it merely lever with force, or is there some kind of lockdown that has to be undone before the tensioner loosens? Ferd
Guest ls1z4me
Did it look like this The ones I have worked with do require a special tool to compress the spring by twisting the belt. Some tensioners have bosses on one side so that when the spring in compressed you can put on a retaining clip that keeps it compressed with the belt is service. The tool looked like a 3 prong fork. 1 prong goes over the top of the belt the other 2 went under. It had a 1/2 in drive at the end so you could use a brake over bar to rotate the tool causing the belt wrap over on its self.
Ferd/289
the tool I have is a long levered wrench made especially for backing off tensioners by using a socket on a bolt head. The belt tensioner in question, is on a 2000 Isuzu Rodeo v6 4x4. When I apply my body weight to the tensioner it does not seem to give, so I do not want to force it with the tool until I know for sure that the tensioner itself not 'locked' in place. The tensioner base has a black inset plastic part which may be what you mentioned as a lock down. Ferd
VRJoe
Grab a manual, it could be a threaded tensioner that has an adjuster that must be turned up or down. There are a number of different types of tensioners, the manual will also tell you how to set the proper tension. Tool number one is a good manual. - Joe
Ferd/289
did the job. I used the long lever tensioner tool to take pressure off the belt, then just restrung the new one. Man do I love serpintine belts, it took 5 minutes to change. Anyone have serpintine belts on their hybird Z? Ferd
