Guest comeandzpa
Are there any tricks to removing the alternator from an 81 280ZX N/A? My dad and I, after going through a new battery and starter, have decided that the alternator is bad as well and we started to replace it today, but when we got the old one unbolted it seems like there isnt really a way to get it out. He wants to try removing the radiator hoses to free up a little space, but I thought that sounded a little excessive. Is there something we're missing? datsunlover
Should just be able to pull/flex the rad hose out of the way, and pull the alt towards the rear of the engine bay.. It may take some fliping over/fiddling to get it out..
Guest pintoz
Should just be able to pull/flex the rad hose out of the way, and pull the alt towards the rear of the engine bay.. It may take some fliping over/fiddling to get it out.. That's exactly what I had to do to get mine out. The only other thing I did differently was take the power steering pump off of the bracket to get a little more access. Keep this in mind, I thought my alternator was bad also. I took my alternator in and it tested fine. There is a warning indicator lamp in the dash for the charging system. If that is burnt out the charging system does not work. Good luck. datsunlover
Oh ya, I forgot there's power steering sometimes... Mine doesn't have it (75 280z) but a lot more 280zx's did. I can see that getting in the way a bit too... I had an 81 with P/S but never had to do the Alt.
