Guest Drewz
The older pre 75 ish engines have a higher nickel content, I believe. I used the existing harness and changed some of the ends to hok up the motor. In the z and zx you can remove all the injection harness as it is useless to you after the swap. You will alreadt have the r200 diff so that is fine unless you want over 400 hp and some sticky tires. What are your goals?? That si the best starting point for any project. There is alot of info if you use the search functions too. You just need 6 weeks off of work to read them all. Are you going to use the JTR swap?? Auto or manual trans?? etc.
DavyZ
Welcome to the forum, Toysport. The answers to your inquiries can be found deep within the bowels of the Chevy forum. In other words, bro, use the search function. However, to steer you in the right direction, you can swap any year of V8 into your Z so long as it is the same year or newer as your 280Z. You must comply with CA smog laws, so this rule is manditory. For easy reference on how to go about the swap, buy the JTR manual from http://www.jagsthatrun.com and read it over a few times. That will set the stage for a comprehensive outline of the necessary steps involved. As for the driveshaft, the JTR manual will cover that, and as for the diff, the 280Z comes with an R200 that is plenty strong to cover most V8s. Again, that is covered here in the forum and the JTR book. The wiring harness depends on what year of 350 you'll be using, whether carbed or EFI. If you go EFI, use EVERYTHING from the donor vehicle. Search the forums for nuggets of gold and download them. Davy

Savage42
hi' date=' i am new to this american engines into japanese cars...so please bare with me. i decided to put chevy 350 small block into my 280z. what year, make and model the 350 engine should come off with? what differential should i use? what drive shaft should i use? ecu? wiring harness? appreciate it.[/quote'] I'll be putting up the whole V8 Z 350 SBC setup on Ebay this weekend, if you are looking. The setup has under 15k miles on it. The motor was built by a local speed shop that builds all the championship sprint car motors. Spec'd at just under 400HP, conservative 375HP. The transmission is race prepped and built to live with 500HP. Details are: Chevy 350 small block, 4 bolt main Bore .020 over with forged flat-top pistons w/ Eagle Rods Trick Flow aluminum heads w/ Comp cam Edelbrock Performer manifold and carb w/ manual choke, throttle linkage Edelbrock aluminum water pump HEI ignition, competition plug wires Chrome Valve covers, air cleaner, alternator & water pump pulleys Remote oil filter, new spark plugs Chrome block hugger headers Full dual exhaust Race prepped 700R4 transmission Trans cooler Driveline w/ GM U-joints R200 diff (stock Z) Electric fuel pump MSA V8 conversion kit (engine & trans mounts) B&M Megashifter molded into Z center console (needs a little work) MSA 4 core radiator w/ hoses 15" electric fan This is the easiest (& most convenient) way to get serious HP and all the parts needed to put a V8 in your Z. You just need to wire it up and go. It'll easily make your Z into a 12 sec beast. This is a hot drivetrain, put together by my brother with nearly $10k invested. On a road trip to Las Vegas, it averaged high 20s mpg on the highway. Everything is clean and ready to go. Bidding will start at $3995. Anyone interested can email me directly and I'll shoot you the link when it's up on ebay. Buyer pays shipping costs.

Savage42
No problem, just thought I'd offer put out the word. You know, it would be cheaper in the long run and for many of us, time is more valuable than a few bucks. I don't know if you've really figured out a complete budget for the project, but if you do, you'll find it'll take more time and money that you think. Figure out what you'll need time & money-wise, double it, and then you'll be close. Sound familiar to anyone else out there besides me? COZY Z COLE
Amen on that!!! A " let's do this to have something different ", turned into a $20,000 project, mainly because of the, while we have this out let's replace this, syndrome. :malebitchslap: LARRY
Toysport
you're absolutely right. i don't have that kind of money for this project. so i decided to pull out in this 350 z8 conversion mainly because money is an object to me. i will go back to plan a w/c was a 280z engine w/ triple mikuni or weber carbs. appreciate the help. Savage42
Well, it's up for grabs. If any of you wouldn't mind posting this to any other Z or Datsun lists, I'd appreciate it. Thanks. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2473799531
Poundz9oh9
I must say that's a beautiful looking set-up -- but I gotta ask -- why get rid of it?
Savage42
Well, my brother built the car the way he wanted it. I bought it from him, it's been stripped down to the shell, down to bare metal, getting a full restoration, going with an LS motor, adding AC, power windows, etc. Basically, I'm going away from the "hot rod" setup to more of a subtle, more quiet version. I guess I'm getting older. Don't get me wrong, I love the sound of a hot V8, but I'm looking for smooth & quiet, even though I won't be getting more power. Just a preference thing and I know it'll be an awesome setup for someone else who's ready to hybrid-ize their Z.
getZ
Is the setup still for sale. I just got a 72 240z and am possibly intrested. I ordered a JTK book but haven't got it yet. I just don't want to cut any of the car up to make this install unless it is very minor.

I just don't want to cut any of the car up to make this install unless it is very minor. Yep, didn't quite hit my reserve and the top couple of bidders haven't got back to me. So, here's the deal, $3500 and buyer pays for shipping. You don't need to do any cutting to fit this in there. You can email me directly at savageg@wwdb.org Here's the link for the setup when I had it on ebay.
