YoungZOwner Posted April 3, 2004 Share Posted April 3, 2004 OK i know i haven't got the pics up of my car yet, but i was just wondering if i have to how hard would it be to make a full tubular frame i have seen some guys witht the front of the car as a tubular frame and looks good. Just a question? any advise would be a help. just thinking this because of how bad, the frame and floor are. Pics soon, snow is gone. Guest gtmattz Posted April 4, 2004 Share Posted April 4, 2004 A full tube frame takes ALOT of work and knowledge, you are essentially fabricating the whole front end geometry from scratch, then you have to concider the mounting for the body panels etc. Ususally is something left to the pros, or people with mucho moola who can pay the pros to do it for them. I belive you also need either a 'jig table' or have some mad jigging skills to do it on your own like in a garage or something. if your car is really rusted out, it would probably be more economical to just find a better shell and build off that. I now have 3 280's, one of which has a real nice body with no appreciable rust, the other 2 are in sad shape rust and dent wise, but they are parts cars. about a year and a half ago I got the first one and found it was a rust bucket in super bad shape, but only paid about $100 for it (thats what I figure the value of the work i did in trade for the car) so I didnt expect much. Was originally planning on trying the same route (tube frame) but after some research just decided to start looking for another shell. then about a month ago there was an ad in the local classifieds for "2 datsun Z cars, both run $700"... needless to say I jumped on it. So now I have 2 parts cars and one builder, all for an initial investment of appx $800. If I can fall on deals like this in the middle of nowhere, Im sure you can find a better shell to work off. I know where i can get another early 240z for like $1200 complete and said that the car in very early stages of rust like just surface so would be able to use that for a good car to start on. just have to come up witht he money. So now i guess i will just finish stripping out the rest of the one i got now and use the parts. But i am not complaining i only had to payto get car home form like a few blocks away, with the flat deck(because cross member rusted off ) so i am not lossing anything. PLus the only i got has like a mint dash in it, and iknow how hard supposedly it is to find one like that. So thanks again for the info.
