Guest Anonymous
Hey guys, I started thinking about automatic tranny options for my Chevy Z project. Has anyone here installed a TH400 into a Z? If so, did you have to modify the stock trans tunnel? Any and all other details would be great.
Turbo Meister
Has anyone here installed a TH400 into a Z? If so' date=' did you have to modify the stock trans tunnel?[/quote'] I'm using a TH 400 and TT383 Chevy in my 72 Z. The fit depends on how far back you mount the trans in the tunnel because at some point the Bellhousing will interfere with the firewall. However, that point is generally not reached because the rear mounted distributor on a Chevy will be the first obstacle to the firewall. I cut out two small protrusions on either side of the trans-tunnel, not due to interference but just because I wanted more clearance. If you do have clearance problems, use a hammer unless its a show car. Good luck Hanns
SportZ2
I put a TH 400 in my conversion back in 95 using the JTR kit. I had to cut out a hole on the pass side of the tunnel to allow the vacum control module (It's called something like that) to not hit the tunnel and then made a plate with a bulge in it to cover it.. On a TH 350 it sits low and faces the rear, out of the way of the tunnel. But on the TH 400 it sits higher up on the side of the tranny and faces towards the pass side of the tunnel. I had no problem with the bellhousing with the JTR setback. If you are doing the scarab position, the module might not come into play since the tunnel flares out towards the firewall allowing more space between tunnel and tranny. fl327
TH350 is my 2nd favorite tranny of all time, next to the M22. put one behind a BBC a while back with slicks and 400hp and its still laying rubber down, like em. TH400 too big, but you can make em clunk those shifts like no other. good luck.
