Guest ProfessorRog
Ok, long story short (somewhat). I bought a 1978 280z with a blown engine and tranny a few years back as a project car. I was young and had just dropped out of school, yeah, I know, a perfect time to attempt a restoration/swap with a car. But, it is what it is and after thoroughly stripping the car down to a rolling chassis I started recognizing just how stupid of a decision I had made. I eventually went back to school and let the car sit for a few years up until now. I'm transferring to the local University and have decided that it is time to get rid of this white elephant, it's taking up space and I can't afford to work on it now or in the next few years. There are however a few situations with the car: 1. I never smogged it on the title transfer and got so pissed off at the DMV that I never bothered to go back and take care of that issue so the title may have some fees associated with it. 2. It is literally in a few hundred pieces and I tossed a number of things that were broken or old. i.e. wiring, windhsield, interior pieces etc. 3. Rust is not a major issue, but it does have two small spots on a floorboard, an area on the bottom of the rear hatch opening and some around the top of one of the taillights. Frankly, I can't imagine that anyone would want this fella but who knows. Basically, I'd like to have this car out of here as soon as possible but I can probably live with it until I have to start getting ready for school at the end of summer. Then it definitely has to go. I don't want to see it going to the scrap yard, but I ain't gonna cry if it does. I was just hoping to hear what you guys would do if you were in my position. Any and all advice/questions are much appreciated.
Poundz9oh9
IMHO, Get what you can for parts, then give the shell away.... That way you can make a little cash to help you with your next semester of school and you get rid of the chassis. It's alway easier to give a bare chassis away than to try and sell it. Most people want at least a LITTLE something to start with and what the hell, if it's free more people would be interested. I only say give the body away because it's only fair to the new owner if he/she has a buttload of DMV fees to deal with.
Guest ProfessorRog
Well, I didn't want to mess with selling the parts separately, but I 've been thinking about it a bit more and I think you're right. I'd probably come out a bit more ahead if I just buckle down and start looking for buyers. As far as the shell, I think I'm going to do some research and figure out what kind of fees are involved . . . then I'll probably give it away. Thanks for the input.
