any new info on ls1 swap?

i've been thinking about putting an ls1 or ls6 and a t56 into an old z car. i noticed there were some old threads about this, but i was wondering if there was any newer info.

also (since i didn't know where to put this question, i'm tacking it on here), if you're removing the engine anyway, are there any differences between a 240z and a 260z?

From my experience there is more difference between the 240 and 260, than the 260 and the 280, but as far as the engine is concerned if you take out the orginal, its mostly the same chasis wise(minor differences that can be over come)

REMEMBER THE LS1 HAS DIFFERENT MOUNTING PROVISIONS THAN CONVENTIONAL SMALL BLOCK. YOU WILL HAVE TO COME UP WITH A DIFFERENT MOUNT AS THE DATSUN CROSMEMBER WON'T WORK. OTHER THAN THAT GO FOR IT, LIGHT WEIGHT AND ALOT OF POTENTIAL FOR HP. THE LS1 IS A GREAT MOTOR (TAKES SPRAY WELL TO).

i will be very interested to see how it goes for you... by that time i will hopefully have a car to start on.

as for it being difficult... it may be wimping out, but i am well aware of my limitations, and i'll have the engine and transmission installed by a professional. the rest of the car i think i can take care of... i'm just not foolish enough to swap in thousands of dollars worth of engine and transmission on my own smile.gif

oh, one other question: would it be worth it to get the transmission before the engine and bolt the t56 to the stock engine, until i could afford the v8? would there be too much custom work involved? might as well improve fuel economy and performance while saving...

I have an LS1 project underway using a '76 280 as the transplant, so perhaps I can share some information.

the differences between the frames are minimal to non-existant. The 240 frame is lighter, yet not as well buttressed as the 280 (and thus heavier) frame....there are mounting adapter issues for that particular aluminum block - but nothing that money can't overcome! The T56 transmission has some fittment issues as well, but they are well documented here in threads and in some of the links where others have done that conversions, so check them out.

This is not a conversion for the timid - the all aluminum block is much lighter than its iron cousins and has great HP potential, but for god's sake don't strip out a bolt hole by overtorque!

I hope to get the motor installed this spring so I don't have much to show for effort right now other than a stripped chassis, but this will make for a nice thread if we can share info/problems/insights during our builds should you go this way.

Keep us informed!
