fuel pressure confusion

I'm running a recently rebuilt Holley 600cfm with an electric fuel pump on an 86 vandura motor inside of a 78 280z. (that's a mouthfull) I'm running WAY rich, flooding the motor and fouling the plugs.

I had thought that a carbs float bowl works as a pressure regulator of sorts. It shuts off when the bowl fills right? But a friend says I need an inline pressure regulator. So it's ordered now, but I'm just eager to get the project running right.

Any other ideas that could cause it to run so rich?

Thanks

-Tony

What pressure is your fuel pump putting out? It is very likely you are running too much pressure and it is blowing open the needle and flooding the carb. A regulator is needed, and running a fuel pressure gauge is a good idea to get your pressure dialed in right where it should be. Good luck.

I had a fuel guage inline but it promptly quit working. Some $10.00 Autozone junk so I don't know if it was ever acurate though it bounced between 6 and 3 PSI. What is the perfect PSI for my Carb? Any advice on a quality although not too pricey guage? It'd be realy cool to have a guage that I could mount on the dash that displayed my fuel pressure but I'm not too picky.

-Thanks

I would check with Holley as far as PSI. Check out Summit Racing .com for in line fuel pressure gauges. Gauge kits for inside the car have been pretty pricey from what I have seen, but maybe they are out there for reasonable prices if you look in the right place
