LT1 vs Carbed 350

Well,

I have found two possible motor/trans combonations for my V8 Z swap.

1. A 78' "010" block 350, 44k miles, backed by a th-350 trans

2. A late 80's LT1, really clean, 111k, MSD igintion, 700R4 trans

Just to make sure, a LT1 has a raised intake plenum with these big loopy runners curling under the plenum and into the heads right? It says Tuned Port Injection on the top.

My question is that would it be just more trouble and time to deal with the fuel injection, ecu, all that stuff, than to just go the simple carb route. Is it really that hard to extract and re-install all components needed to run the motor? I know my way around old school 350's pretty well, and the power output can be leaps and bounds beyond a well worked LT1.

Any opinons, i would like that LT1 because of the 700R4 and it looks just so darn cool! :-D

Oh, this motor/trans is goin in a 71 240z

Thanks

Thats not an LT1. It's just a regular TPI. LT1 has a rectangular intake and runs stright into the cylinders. TPI is old hat and runs out of air a 4500 and above. My advice is to leave the TPI alone.

The TH350 is old hat too and without an overdrive you'll be listening to the engine sing at 3000 rpm on the freeway. Find a deal with an OD tranny and you'll be much happier with it.

Yes, that sounds like a TPI engine. If I remember correctly, those made 245 hp in 350 cid and 230hp in 305 cid and a ton of low rpm torque. Be careful, that TPI could be a 305. The TPI engines make great torque and get good mileage but not good for rpms.

They do make aftermarket intakes that fix the TPI low hp problem. If you want a low rpm torque monster and a quiet daily driver then a TPI would not be a bad idea. But getting the injection to work in your car would be much harder than installing carb linkage. LOL.

I would install the 78' with a 268 Comp Cam using the 350 trans and a 2200 to 2500 stall torque converter. 240's have 3.36 gears which should help keep the rpms down a little lower. But they will still be a little high for most peoples taste. I personally didn't like an automatic transmission in my V8 Z. And I had a lot of problems with the 700R OD transmissions.

To make it really nice, install a GM T5 5 spd trans, 3.90 gear, blocker hugger headers, single 3" exhaust, vortec heads, and a 292 comp cam. This would make a low 12 second Z! I had this combo a few year ago and wished I would have left it that way. Since then, I made it faster but started breaking things. Not as fun that way.......
