I've heard from alot of V-8 junkies that the T5 is a week tranny. So i thought about putting a Borg/warner T56 in my Z is that possible? Do they make swap kits for it? Will it bolt right up to a 350' ? can i use the JTR mounts?

Yes the T56 will work with the JTR transmission mount. I had to use a 4lb hammer to solve some clearance issues in the tunnel. Took 2 test fits of the motor & trans before final fit. Funny how much you learn as your car comes together.

Also, unless you're doing drag strip launches on slicks, the T5 should hold up well. The tires will smoke before the tranny gives. I'm making about 400 ft./lbs. and have had no issues with my T5 in about 500 miles or so. I know they are limiting my acceleration, but I have the same tires on my Z with the 350 that I was running with the L28. I figured they would act as sort of a fuse for my drivetrain.

Labrat, do you have the World Class T5 or the non WC? Just curious. I know Mike D (73BOTIZ) had a Non WC and it did fine for his drag strip abuse for a while and yes, it smoke the tires all the time :D

I personally haven't had good luck with T-5s, but that's just me; a lot of people *have* had good luck. I eventually found a T56 that I could afford, and I just have to say it's a *much* stouter tranny (albeit twice as heavy), with a dramatically better feel and mechanical action.

That said, remember that the T56 was designed for the later (Gen IV?) V8s, and there are some idiosyncrasies: it uses a "pull-type" hydraulic clutch, thus needing a late-model clutch and bellhousing; has a rather tall 1st, and no provision for mechanical speedometer. These are all things you can get around, of course, but they all add up to mo' money mo' money mo' money. And a high PITA factor.

JTR has some information about it on their website, and it's covered in their TBI & TPI engine swapping book (which you'll need anyway).

I ended up using a Weir bellhousing (they're online) and my existing clutch/flywheel. Not cheap, though.
