Guest HellTriX
Yay! I just got my Z running after rebuilding the SU carbs without a manual But I noticed my volt gauge was pegged out and when I touched the brakes I saw a bright flash and heard a loud CRACK! I blew out my bulbs in the break lights... I am getting like 70+ volts out of my alternator, and I just replaced it before I started the car with a brand new lifetime warrenty one.. Can someone point me to where the voltage regulator is on a 1976 280z? I tired following the wires at the alternator, but they just disapear into the wiring harness and unless the voltage regulator is in the cab of the car, I cant find it. I assume the voltage regulator is out? Am I right or is there some other problem that Z cars have to generate this high voltage? Thanks
fl327
I believe its behind the shelf located by the battery where the fusible links are mounted.
Guest HellTriX
Thanks fl327.. I originally thought this was an interally regulated alt. then I got the wiring diagrams from the library and traced the wires to the box behind the plate you told me about which turned out to be the voltage regulator. $31.98 for a new one and now I am not blowing 25 amp fuses or light bulbs through the car. When I first tested it, it even blew a 50 amp fuse hehe. So, after a new alt, and voltage reg it seems to be in order. Just gotta tune the SU carbs now since I rebuilt them and the float levels are all screwed up.
