Top speed on V8Z's?

Here's a link the RX discussion group about this car -> http://www.rx7club.com/ubb/Forum8/HTML/001293.html

I swear it reminds me a bit of some of the bashing that the V8 Zs get elsewhere! Yeah, the rotary motor is REALLY sweet but it's more fragile than a piston motor. It requires good A/F and strict maintenance - knock will kill it in a heartbeat. With the specific output of that motor I guess I can understand why!

He's claiming that he can get th eweight balance to be much the same. His shipping weights for the assembled rotary and LT1 are pretty favorable too. The V8 will certainly change the character of the car, no doubt, but I'm not sure that the car will be unbalanced or handle too poorly. Heh, anyone considered a rotary motor into a Z yet? He's got a 3rotor for sale smile.gif

He really did give it the old college try. Several motors including the one imported from Japan that he decided not to use. His power requirements from that were such that he was afraid it would pop right away. I'm trying hard to keep mine in one piece myself and am proceeding with the upgrades cautiously - I understand his worries (grin). I'll hope to hit a bit over 300 and maybe 350HP.

Heh, if you've got a WEB site shoot me an URL. I'm ALL EARS for parts sources and need a few stock parts already. This car has had a checkered life it seems but runs well!

Hrm, should we move this to the high-tech forum?

You are right about the rotary being fragile. They are very fragile and some of my friends who have gotten 3rd gens don't understand their high-maintenance. So lots of rotaries have blown up around me because people don't listen and think it's like any other engine. 95% of all blown rotaries are in owner related problems (ie didn't change the oil, wanted too much boost with too little fuel, or just started adding parts to get the horsepoower and didn't take precaution, etc) I think we all agree and there's no use in preaching about it any longer, the rotary is light and powerful, but fragile. End of story, and if you are interested in any parts, go to http://www.rotarypowered.com If you are interested in pics of my deceased CYM RX-7, go to http://www.rotarypowered.com/cym

Will always be a rotorhead on track, but my V8Z will dust you on the street.

as much as i would love to have a 3rd gen rx7 with a v8, even i must admit that it just wouldn't be right.

from what i've red, rx7s can be quite reliable, if you replace every single gauge and meter with an aftermarket part - the ones mazda used aren't even up to the level of idiot lights. by the time the temp sensor rises at all, your engine is blown, etc.

now, if only they got double digit mileage...

Hrm, I just got about 15mpg on my last tank and I do NOT take it easy smile.gif Our Impalla SS gets just a little better but doesn't require premium. Guages are okay and there are warning lights - swapping them would ruin the look I'm afraid. The odometer is nice and I'm waiting for Autometer to release a Phantom electronic speedo with an LCD now.

Heh, I've actually been to your site before smile.gif Don't supose you were able to salvage the Apexi PFC from the wreck and still have it? With the exception of a hi-flow cat and some sort of computer work I'm mostly all done. I'll bump the boost some, replace the turbos (on the way), maybe a J&S, but not too much more. Some reliability stuff perhaps - AST, radiator, pop-off valve. (shrug)

Tomorrow I'll be working on the Z though. smile.gif

Referring to the original topic...I had my 280V8 rolling way to fast earlier tonight eek.gif I will say that it was stable for the short burst we made. I have a front air dam installed and the car is lowered a little.

I went from about a 50mph roll with a BAAAAD Supra Turbo and was glued to his door up until we let off.

My speedo doesn't work...he said he saw his sweep past 130mph and figured we let off around 137!

I was all into the nitrous the whole time. I still had overdrive to go (700R4) but I am not interested in hitting OD at WOT. Really, I'm not interested in going that fast...I really just like being quick biggrin.gif

BTW, I've been driving my Z to work every day for the past two weeks!

Oh man - top end with NOS? Yipes! Watch your temps doing that, you wouldn't be the first person to get a surprise hitting the button too long. Supras are indeed nasty but you've probably got half of what he paid in your Z and I'll bet he was a bit shocked smile.gif I looked for a Supra before the RX - they're too darned expensive stock much less modified. Was your car getting loose on the top end? Heh, time to get a speedo!

Actually it doesn't take very long to get from 50 to 130+ at WOT on the button. It was really just a drag race from a fast roll.

As far as cost, hmm...I figure I likely have less than 1/6th of the amount in my car as his. And that is being VERY conservative!

And finally...no, my car wasn't getting loose on the top end. I do have a front air dam and the car is lowered.
