Guest Anonymous
Hello, i've been reading this site for over a month now and i pretty much know what i want to do. I have a 240z (73) and i plan on dropping in a 305w/5speed from an 89 camaro rs (friend is getting a new engine, im getting this one cheap). I have all the connections to fabricate my own mounts and i really dont want to buy the JTR book as i've basically read the entire book on this site already. I was wondering if anyone had some pictures they can send me or post up of what the engine compartment looks with the mounts in so i can get an idea of what the engine bay looks like, basically where the mounts go. If anyone wants to be REALLY nice (and willing to break some copywright laws)I'd really love it for someone to scan me the plans for the engine mounts. Sinse its all i'll need that i can't calculate myself, im really on a budget and really dont want to pay for the book. Hope this doesnt push anyones buttons or anything, thanks a lot. Scottie-GNZ
Al, I know this will end up being taken the wrong way, but what the hell. If you are building a V-8 Z-car and your budget is so tight that you cannot afford to buy the most important component of the swap, then your project is already in trouble . Just a little constructive criticism, but anyway, SHIELDS UP, FLAME AWAY ------------------ Scottie 71 240GN-Z http://www.mindspring.com/~vscott911/gnz.html
Drax240z
I appreciate where you are coming from Al, we are all on a budget of some type I think. Honestly though, if you spend the $30 on the JTR book, I guarentee that you will make more than $30 less in mistakes. I really don't think you can get all the info from this site. Granted you could probably engineer it the JTR way without the book, but that said you will save yourself more money in the long run by having the book! BLKMGK
JTR book has some very good stuff in it. Things liek wiring, adjusting the tach for the new V8, how to move the brake lines to keep them from frying, suggestions on how to do the exhaust system - and how not to! You'll be needing the info on the hood latch, clutch master unless you run an auto, and information on throttle cable too. Buy the book. You don't want your car to end up looking liek a V8 Z I saw downtown racing once. It had a plastic fuel cell strapped inthe hatch and a - get this - shoe string tied to the throttle bellcrank to pull the carb's throttle blades! Scariest damn thing I've seen in awhile. Do it right or you'll regret it and oding it right means spending a bit on the JTR book. If you want to get it real cheap try E-Bay, there's usually a copy or two for sale over there
John Scott
Al, welcome to the site. You're from Colorado?? Which city? There is a ton of information on the site, but having an easy to access JTR book is really going to help your conversion. A few of us have taken on the conversion w/o the JTR book. All I can say is that after doing it the hard way, I would have saved hours of time and frustration had I bought the book first. I wasn't fortunate enough to know it existed, and even though I don't run a v8, most of the information would have been priceless. Figuring out the wiring by trial and error, from a poor schematic AND being colorblind was a battle in itself. 5 years after my swap I still went ahead and got the JTR manual. The little things like speedometer gears and pointers you might not consider was worth the price for me. Great reference. Guest Anonymous
ok ok so i pushed some buttons, sorry. I'm in lakewood, a high school student with next to no money, but i love cars and it took me a long time to decide on a project. Sorry if I got any of you riled up, you know more than me, i was just giving it a shot. Anyway, does anyone have a detailed site for the installation? I'd still like to see some in-the-making pics. jhaag
Al: I live in Englewood (near the University of Denver) and have the JTR V8 Z book and the JTR Tuned Port Injection (TPI) swap book (also excellent). I'd be happy to let you look at either one. My work number is 303-871-4309 (the best way to reach me) and my home number is 303-781-3184. BLKMGK
Nah, not riled up just trying t give you good advice is all. I bought the silly book a year ago, have read it dozens of times, and when I finally pull the motor sometime soon I'll have a darned good idea as to what I'm doing - I hope. It's just something good to read so that you understand the steps, what's needed, and where you can go wrong if you're not careful. Sure, there are gaps inthe book and those of us here who've done the sweap can help, but it helps lot's to have read it first is all. (shrug) Heh, you in auto shop? If so you can probably make the mounts in class and maybe get help doing the actual swap too - that would be a neat project. Just don't let some jealous dork trash the car when you're in another class. A friend of mine taught that class out here - kids did some of the meanest things to other people's nice cars...
