Guest Zrac3r
heres how it goes.. my radiator fan broke and put a huge hole in my radiator. its happened twice with 2 radiators. so what im wondering is if you can use the taurus fan with a stock radiator? im still running an Lseries motor and id like to know if it would work or if the fan is to wide and if its even worth it at all. thanks
Guest 73TPIZ
This guy on ebay gave his Taurus fan dimensions as 4X18X23"wide. That sounds right as i'm getting a fan this week. Auction's ended but here's the link. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7920918108&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT The fan i had was supposedly from a Taurus but much thicker (~6") so that didn't work out so back to the JY this week. Height and width seemed the same as the linked one. I think you'll need '91 or '92 up but definetly one with the 3.8 V6, not 3.0. And will be 3 wires for the two speed. Good luck, hope that helps. Guest 305240
Yes, there are different styles of fans on the Taurus, depending on the years. The one you want is a 2 speed. It also has the flat motor with permenent magnets in it,as opposed to the motor that looks like an old style fan motor. They last longer. If I'm not mistaken, they are only about 4" thick, and they do pull air!
mobythevan
I could not get a taurus fan to fit with the L series engine. Even trimming the shroud down it would not clear the water pump pulley. I think I have a 280 radiator in a 240 car so maybe it will work for you if the radiators are different. spotfitz
I couldn't get the Taurus fan to work in my stock(at the time) early '74 260. There wasn't enough room between the water pump pulley and the radiator. I installed it as a pusher and didn't look back. I'll be rethinking the whole system in the near future due to intercooler install.
ww
The Taurus 2 speed fan upgrade is generally done with a V8 swap. Since the V8 is considerably shorter than the L6, it drops in with no problem. A stock radiator with L6 motor only leaves about 3.25" of clearance between the radiator and the water pump pulley. Some people I know have offset the electric fan to clear the water pump pulley with moderate success. I've installed an aftermarket aluminum radiator and lost another .25" of clearance but am still going to use an electric fan: #BCI-75014 from Summit Racing. It's a 16" fan that moves 1600 cfm and is only 2.5" thick. http://store.summitracing.com/default.asp?target=esearch.asp&N=100&Ntk=PartSearch&Ntt=BCI-75014&x=18&y=11 I'm hoping that with the aluminum radiator the 1600 cfm will be enough to keep the temp down. If not, I'll just add another one on the front as a pusher. Out of curiousity, has anyone ever installed a fan on their intercooler? I'm sure someone has tried this but nothing relevant came up in my search... Cheers, WW
MikeJTR
JTR makes a radiator kit for the Z cars with the L series engine. The instructions are on the following links, and show the amount of room for an electric fan. Aluminum radiator kit: http://www.jagsthatrun.com/Pages/Parts_DATZ_Radiator_Kit.html instructions: http://www.jagsthatrun.com/6-cyl-Datsun-chapter/12-Cooling_System-7.5.pdf To answer your question, I doubt the Taurus fan will work in your application. Drax240z
I also could not get the taurus fan to fit in my car with the Lseries, with lots of trimming, offsetting, etc... it just wouldn't go. I ended up getting a flex-a-lite slimline (part number 116) and it fit perfectly and was really inexpensive. (less than $100)
materchan
i got mine to fit but there was extensive trimming and i cant change my alternator belt without taking the radiator and fan out.
Guest tony78_280z
I got some fan I found laying on the ground in a junkyard. Jumped the wires and it ran. Fastened it to my radiator with zip ties. On the other side, blowing the same direction (reveresed the wires) I have a second fan that I purchased for $60.00. (The free one pushes more air btw) With the two fans I displace enough heat for my 350ci motor (or course my radiator is 2 years old, but it is the L28 replacement) I could have saved 60.00 and simply spent more time at the junkyard. Find something and make it work
olie05
Awesome!!! I just bought a 2 speed taurus electric fan for my L28 haha. Ok so heres a question for materchan, What position did you mount it in and how much is "extensive" cutting? -Oliver
olie05
Went to work on the fan install today. I didn't get it in, due to not having planned for anything to hold it to the radiator, but I got it in as long as I held it up. I had to mount the fan offset to the exhaust/intake side of the engine, and I had to cut all the fan shroud supports on the passengers side of the fan, so now the fan motor is only bieng held to the shroud by three of the supports on the driver's side. With all this cut away, the fan easily clears the water pump pulley, but the problem seems to be in the crank pulley, where the fan motor support rubs even with extensive clearancing. I will probably end up just throwing it on in front of the radiator to be on the safe side... ( I don't like the possibility of it hitting the crank pulley ) Hope that helps someone in the future! -Oliver
Guest billyzbear
Are your motor mounts new? I never had a problem with fan hitting rad. A friend of mine did because he had bad mounts.
