Guest s28250
a 76 280 with a 82zx engine and 5 speed, 3.90 R200 rear end. Engine dismantled, boiled, honed, 3 angle valve job done a P79 head, new rings, bearings, timing chain, gears, tensioner, oil pump, water pump and MSA cam, rebuilt 4 screw SU's, new header and 2.5" exhaust, and a new holley red fuel pump. What type of perfomance should I expect.? I am looking at buying this car but it is a long distance from me and I do not wish to be disappointed. I have had 3 previous Z's all stock. A 78 280z, a 82 turbo, and a 1984 300 AE turbo. Would this one outperform the above mentioned? Sorry for the long post, I am new to the modified Z scene. Guest 83supaZ
if its not turbo no way its going to match the other two.... and.. what the heck is engine "boiled"??
Guest bastaad525
flat top or dish top pistons? P79 is the lower compression head, same as P90 turbo head but with round exhaust ports. If it has dish top pistons, compression will be very low. Even with flat tops, the compression is relatively low with the P79, but not too bad. It wont be 'super fast' either way... I built a very similiar setup before doing the turbo motor swap... got me about 170hp at the wheels, and a high 14 second quarter mile, 0-60 in about 6.5 seconds, in a 2300 lb. 240Z. A bit faster than a bone stock 280ZXT. A bit more hp than a bone stock 280ZXT would put down to the wheels, so even in the heavier 280 body you should still be a tad faster than a bone stock ZXT. But, this was with dish top pistons and a higher compression N42 head. Knowing what pistons are in the motor, and the cam specs, would help to make a better educated guess what kind of power the motor might have. Either way... it wouldn't be really considered 'fast' by todays standards...

johnc
I am looking at buying this car but it is a long distance from me and I do not wish to be disappointed. My best advice - take the time and go inspect and drive the car before spending the money. If you can't do that, I suggest you pass on the deal.
