Aftermarket LT1 Harmonic balancers

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have experience with aftermarket harmonic balancers for the LT1?

I'm concidering using the Street and Performance alternator only setup which requires a Corvette balancer and hub. My engine is from a Caprice so I will have to convert to the smaller balancer and have a hard time forking over $200.00+ for a stock balancer and hub. I've found several for sale new on ebay that are much cheaper but am concerned about the quality. What should I look for and are there any particular companies to avoid aside from negative feedback on ebay?

BTW: Has anyone else used the Street and Performance setup?

Thanks

Wheelman

The Corvette LT1 hub and the Camaro LT1 hub are the same.

Also, the harmonic balancer/pulley is the same between the Caprice LT1 and the Camaro LT1, although earlier Camaro LT1 harmonic balancer/pulleys did not have the provisions to run the engine driven fan pulley available as an option on the Caprice LT1.

In other words, you only have to purchase the Camaro/Corvette hub if you want to run the "alternator only" kit.

I'm curious to find out if you want to run the "alternator only" kit to eliminate the ac compresor and the power steering pump on the Caprice LT1. The reason is because JTR (that's me) is working on an inexpensive idler pulley kit to eliminate the ac compressor and the ps pump on the Camaro LT1 engines, and the Caprice LT1 engines. It basically consists of a steel plate, two idler pulleys, and some spacers and hardware to bolt onto the cast aluminum accessory brackets used on the Camaro and Caprice LT1 engines.

Mike,

If you're still tuned in here I'd like to know if you ever got the parts described in this post developed. If so please inform. I don't see them at your website. I need to order some stuff from you and would like to delete the power steering pump with your part.

Don't want to hijack this thread but the F body and the B body Balancer do look the same but the Hubs are not. It seems the B body hub sticks the balancer out further by about a half an inch, I found this out last night while swapping over my F body engine accessory bracket onto my B body engine. The pulleys for the F body are a 1/2 inch further back, I measured the balancer from the block and came up with a about 4-1/2" on the F body motor and 5" on the B body motor.

I attached some pictures here:

Have others encountered this?

Should I shim out the F body accessory bracket or change swap over the Hub, I would rather shim out the bracket it seems others have run into problems removing the hub, destroying the threads in the crank and messing with the orientation due to the crank/hub being keyless.

Another pause in the road.....

OH, you can see my simple ac/ps deletion plate and junkyard pullys

I'll take some better pics. It works fine, used a much shorter belt.

Thanks,

Greg
