Guest tony78_280z
At an idle my volts is way low, like 8-10. When I rev the motor it jumps up to 12-14. Then when I let up it drops back down. First, Please note my vehicle stats at the signature below. Second, I haven't gotten the tack set up correctly yet so I can't give an RPM at idle, but the motor sounds real good at idle. Third, I know I had the altenator wires 1 and 2 backwards at one point. (Drained the battery dead) Fourth, the battery is pretty dead. I got it on the charger for the night and will mess with it more tomorrow. Is my alternator shot? (don't say that cause I lost the reciept) Is this great RPM based change due to the mostly drained battery? Or is my alternator not pushing enough power at idle? How do I fix that? Should my car be able to run disconnected from the bat posts? (I remove the battery cables the car runs for half a second and then dies.) Thanks for any input. (Even the sarcastic ones) I'm also posting this in the general engine troubleshooting
Thumper
It is more than likely your alternator. Also your battery is also probably bad. If a car battery is completly drained then more than likely it will not hold a charge afterwards. On a side note my car at idle with no alt belt on (a.k.a. alternator not on) my voltage at idle was 11-12volts.
GabeRoc
firstly, dont' double post. bad kitty. second, you might have killed your battery. was is stone dead or just not enough to start the car? before you do anything else i would get a charge on th battery. next i would touch my idle just a shave, if a small increase in idle brings the volts back up,you might just be idling too low. Guest tony78_280z
it requires a good increase in RPM to bring the volts up. I'd say at least a 1000 RPM. The bat wasn't completely dead. It'd still play the CD player and lights (rather dim) but not enough to turn over the motor. I have faith in the bat. Do you think since it was so low is why I had this strange symptom? Guest bigbadZ
Prob. the alternator, your car should run fine with the battery disconected. Check voltage at the back of the alternator, should be aroung 12V. if operating correctly. I had a problem like this with my Z, it ended up being a bunch of bad connections and corrosion. let me know if your running the stock Z alternator wiring, if so there was a real crappy factory connection on the power wire branching off the alternator to the fuse box. Hope this helps!!
