Electric sunroof install

My 280Z has some of those crappy manual pop-up split panel sunroofs in it...it's got some miles on it because the outside seal is really showing it's age, plus it leaks a little in really hard rains. I was checking out some aftermarket electric spoiler sunroofs (the ones like factory in Eclipses, Hondas, etc) that pop out and go back above the roof, acting like a spoiler. The kits were about $350...I was just curious if anyone had installed, or had a shop install one for them? One guy that I asked that runs audio/fabrication shops said it'd be around $450 on labor...does that sound right? Im just curious. I'm right outside Chattanooga, TN if anyone knows of some really reputable shops to check out. Thanks!

i have that same sunroof on my car the one where you push out and press the button for it to fall back to place, but the plastic clamp that holds it up is broken, so im in the same predicament, but mine seems to fly open when driving, any advice?

there is a member here that at one point in time had an early Z with a 80's honda sunroof installed. I looked into it and although I could not find the model he was using (he didnt know either) I found several that look like they might just be able to be grafted into the S30 Z sunroof. in the end though I settled on a genII RX7 I cut the entire unit out of the roof and paid 40$ for it I did some trial mock-ups and it appeared to be just right...unfortunately though the project was sold before I could finish her.....

there are several nice factory sunroofs that could be cleanly installed by a competent body shop for less than what your looking at. personally I would go that route as the aftermarket electrics are not much better than the manual one your looking to replace.

I hlep put one in my friends galant. it was a pain because it didn't fit right. I don't know what type the window was for (ebay oem), looked like it would fit. We ended up making/welding a channel for it and flush fitting it in. the electronics weren't all that hard to wire up. $350 for labor is a bit high, are they quoting for a certain amount of hours or is that flate rate. installing one would probably take like 2 hours, its all about what tools you have on hand. I would look around and say what one shop quoted, you can baggen it down a bit.

Oh also you are probably going to want sto make a new headliner board. the s30 came with a headliner but it was contact cemented dirrectly to the underside of the roof.

edit: when did you see if the wheather stripping for the window had wheather sealer on it (glue) most people either forget about it or just don't care when they put it in themselves.
