Guest ON3GO
hey guys me and a friend are working on a S2000 at the shop and cant really figure this out.. heres what we know and what the car is doing.. The car originally came to me with hard starting in cold condition. Plugs were fouled. Had small misfire across all cylinders. Under light to moderate aceleration the car would cut out at higher RPM's. The car wouldn't do it every time though. Progressively the hard start turned into no start. If spark plugs were cleaned a heavy grey smoke with an odd smell would come from the exhaust. If I accelerated through the sputter it would smooth out and every once in awhile cut out again. Lots of carbon on top in pistons. Plugs lots of traces of fuel, but carbon on plugs are minimal. There are no white spots on the plugs, but there are clean areas on the electrode and tip. The plugs are fuel fouled but relatively clean, like a steam cleam. Ignition coils all have the correct voltage supply and similar resistance. No fuel exscaping from pressure regulator vaccum orifice. There is heavy smell of unburnt fuel from exhaust while trying to turn engine over. Don't currently have a tool to pressurize the cooling system. Fuel pressure at pump is good. Everytime I check the car first thing at work I pull the plugs and look in to the chamber and see a wet substance. I would think that if it was fuel it would have evaporated through either the exhaust or intake valves. We think its a head gasket, but it could be a fuel pressure regulator or even the ECM. Any thoughts? Any help would be VERY appriciated. mike
randy 77zt
is the check engine light on?it should be-use it a scanfor dtc's.next check fuel pressure.some newer cars have a fuel system that doesnt use a return line .the ecm pulses the fuel pump power and there is a pressure sensor on fuel rail.if so use pid monitor on scan tool for fuel pressure.goto to a internet s2000 forum or try to locate factory tsb's-if the s2000 in your shop is doing this it woulndt be the first.also pull a fuel sample from the fuel rail into clear glass container-could be water in fuel.try to do basic test and get a result-try to crossthe basics of of a list-like fuel pressure ,water in fuel, compression test.where is the timing for ecm picked up at-the cams(belt driven) or flywheel or crank shaft.it could be out of time -a toothed wheel could have slipped or timing belt slipped.
