Guest tony78_280z
I bought the speed-o cable from Motorsports that goes from Z Speed-o meter to the Chevy Tranny. I hooked it up tranny side when the tranny went in, and I was so excited to test drive it that I forgot to hook it up on the meter side first. It dragged a little. I tore up the wire/cable on the inside pretty badly. I hooked it up speed-o meter side and drove it again. The needle jumped a few times and then died permentantly. http://www.zcarparts.com/store/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=10-1858&Category_Code=PRC01 So, do I need a whole new $80.00 motorsport cable, or can I just replace the wire/cable on the inside? I seen those inner wire/cables in the help! section at the auto parts store for not too much. Are they universal? How does one go about replacing it? Does it just pull out and slide a new one in? Thanks.
spdsk8r
For my speedo cable, I used the stock Datsun cable housing. On the transmission side the thread is very close to the chevy thread. I just chased it with a tap to change the thread. I then purchased a universal cable core and installed it into the Datsun housing. I have under fifteen dollars in my speedo cable. This is the third Datsun/V-8 conversion I have done this on. Two were 280Z's and my present ZX. So, one of those universal cable cores should do the job for you. Guest tony78_280z
You said... "I used the stock Datsun cable housing" Grrrr! I hate it when I miss out on the easy and cheapest way !! You said... "I just chased it with a tap to change the thread." What does that mean? "I then purchased a universal cable core and installed it into the Datsun housing." This is what I want then. And it just slides up in there?
Guest 77vegasz
I have a MSA Datun/Chevy cable new in box that I never used, as I changed to an Autometer speedo before I was on the road. I was going to put it on E-bay, but if you are interested, I sell it to you for 40.00. E-mail me at stratman315@aol.com if you are interested. spdsk8r
What I meant by chasing it with a tap was I borrowed a thread tap that was the correct thread for the chevy trans, and turned it into the female end of the Datsun cable housing, thereby changing the thread in the Datsun cable housing to the chevy thread. I also know a couple of guys who just screwed the Datsun cable housing onto the chevy trans and let it change the thread, but I prefer to not risk messing the threads on the trans. The universal cable core will just slide into the Datsun cable housing. It will have to be cut to length and a end crimped onto the cut end. It sounds harder than it really is. Guest trickz
I also used the stock cable and just squared the end (to mate with the GM trans) and split the housing so the threads would kinda match it has worked for years. skipzoomie
You could also take the broken cable to a speedometer shop and have it duplicated. They are very cheap. In the $15 range. Check to see if the cable housing has been damaged on the inside by inserting the cable and feeling for any resistance. If the inside has been damaged there is a good chance that it will destroy the new cable. Experience talking! Good luck.
