Mufflers that last

I'm looking into a new muffler. I have a magaflow now that is 2 1/4. It was quieter for a week maybe. I've got a built 3.1L, fully ported head, 3 45mm webers and a 6-1 coated header. I'm thinking on having 3" out of header and then working to 2 1/2 mid way back to a 2 1/2 xs borla with two outlets. I'm not totally sold on the borla, I always thought they where over priced. I'm also looking into a hooker max flow. Before this I had a dynomax which I thought was alright. Would it hurt to have a resinater? Any help would be great.

I am assuming you are trying to keep this thing quiet. If so, a resinator will help, but not needed.

For performance, I would suggest stepping up the exhaust system. Sense exhaust gasses expand, it helps create a "suction" effect. This helps keep the exhaust gasses moving back out the tail pipe, and not going back into the cylinder. Keeping cumbustion chambers cleaner & cooler.

For quality, I can tell you what I have had experience with.

Bossal is a ceramic coated exhaust. Ceramic coatings help prevent rust, so you save money by not buyng a stainless exhaust. Problem is, every Bossal sytem I have ever installed turned out to be crap and a PITA. Mainly because of the ceramic coating. The coating needs to be baked on, and to safe cost, they leave it to your burning hot exaust sytem to do this. So, the first time I installed one of these was a quick learning experience. I ended up with a lot of coating all over my hands, and a rusty exhaust before long. Afer that, I was VERY careful not to touch it, but how do you install an exhaust without touching it.

So, my suggestion is to just stay away from ceramic coated exhausts all together.

Next is Pacesetter. I can't say enough BAD things about them. They are made from low grade steel, I am surprised they don't rust by the time they arrive at your door. I have just had huge problems with them every time.

After the bad experiences, I just stuck with stainless or titanium. Just something that is not going to rust.

One company that makes great sounding, quality, stainless exhausts is Thermal Research & Development. They are perfect for the everyday driver car. They probably don't make one specificaly for your car, but they do sell universal mufflers. They even have a "Stealth" line that offer the same performance, but are much quiter.

Ya, I looking to quiet my 71' 240Z down alittle. When I goose the throttle it sounds like an explosion. It's mostly because cops always look at me and I know they hear me a couple of miles away. On the freeway it's a little louder than I would like. At 100+ it's way too loud.

I search and found this guys post, http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=93335. I don't see Thermal Research on the list. I read some on thier website but had to go to the dealers to get any real info. How are they with warrenties? Basically, if the baffles blow out will they replace it? I never heard of them are they big in the import seen. Is the performance as good as Borla and Bassani? Or are they a step up? What configuration would be best? Straight through? It doesn't need to be silent, just not crazy loud at 100+.

How is Borla with thier warrenties?

These are quality exhaust systems that I've had experience with:

Magnaflow (lifetime warranty), Borla (lifetime warranty), and Thermal R&D (really quiet on my Honda, great looking, and lifetime warranty too).

All are great quality and have an assortment of options. Rule of thumb (as I've heard), the bigger the muffler, the quieter your exhaust will be.

Yeah, Thermal has a lifetime limited warranty but to be honest, I have never had to deal with their warrany.

I have sold countless systems of theirs because compared to the big name systems out there, they are cheap, and stainless.

Never had a quality problem either.

I don't mean to be a Thermal salesman here, but I guess I have always been impressed with Thermal, and then gotten what I expected (or less) with everyone else.

I am a little iffy on Magnaflow stuff, but that may have been just the one I have had experience with. Everyone else seems to like them.

I feel Borla, while the quality is good, you pay a little extra for the name.

So, how about the size? I've going back and forth about 3" or 2 1/2". For a NA car would 3" hurt? Would a bullit be good for pre-muffler or resinator. I would think I need something that can handle a lot of heat.

Borla. I've run them on all my 240Zs for years and never had a problem. Yes, the can be a little loud, especially the XR-1 Raceline I ran. A 3" exhaust would be the best for your NA motor but I wouldn't spend the money on a stainless system unless you're driving in the snow belt.

That made me think because I am in the snow belt. (and it sux btw) Do people in states like Arizona, Cali, etc have to worry about rust on exhausts?

At first I thought not, but doesn't the exhaust itself oxidate normal exhausts even though the weather might not?

If you left a mild steel exhaust unpainted you would quickly get a light coat of surface rust but I've got a 2.5" mild steel exhaust system lying around that was on my 240Z from 1995 to 2002 and, except for the surface rust, its fine. A couple hours with a Scothbrite pad and some WD40 and it would look new. FYI... I'm in SoCal.

I live Oxnard Ca. so snow isn't a problem. Going by the HP/DP link i left before the Borla XS isn't as loud as the XR. I found one for 85 which is cheaper than thermal.
