Guest jjohart
Hi...I've an 83 280ZXT, and when I turned the key to acc position 1, the point at which the radio/subwoofers/antenna go on, the radio played/displayed a few secs then went out/no display, and I've not been able to get it going since! I checked the radio fuse, as well as the other fuse the self powered sub amps run off of and no burnt fuses. The subs powered up along with all other acc position 1 devices, so I am pretty sure there's nothing wrong with ignition power relay, and I am pretty sure no aftermarket fuses were wired into the radio, only underhood relays for the amp-which are ok too! The antenna doesn't go up, though, which is to be expected, I guess (assume there's no other fuse/relay for that, right?). I checked the Nissan service manual, and they don't show any other fuses at the point of the radio, so I'm reluctant to pull it out for that. Can anyone tell me if there's another fuse or relay that could affect the radio alone? If not, which connector do I pull off the radio once I pull it out and check what pins on it for 12V operation. When/if I get that far, can you tell me if its usually cheaper to send these out somewhere to fix if it's a power supply/amp issue within the radio, and WHO DOES THAT? If not, any leads for an identical replacement at low cost, other than waiting on Ebay? Thanks John-Natick, MA..was going to use the "rear" ash tray cut out for my 60GB iPod
Tim240z
John....you have the patience of a Saint!! I would have driven that thing off a cliff long ago!! Sorry, but I just don't know enough about the ZXs (or anything else for that matter) to help out, but are certainly having your share of troubles with that thing!! Guest jjohart
Whaa...I'm not sure that your reply was being altogether charitable, at least for being a moderator who'd drive a Z car over a cliff (anything older than a Z31, anyway!!). I always wonder why I'm typing HybridZ.org, instead of .com! Yes, I have spent a fortune trying to sort the car out as if I could transport myself back to the year 1983 (maybe I should have bought a DeLorean and modded it! aka Back to the Future), but methinks you doth sympathize a bit too much on the little things...after all, I realized pretty quick these old radios are a dime a dozen on Ebay (condition variable, of course). My tiny wallet should wack my head at the thought that this is again a great excuse for yet another upgrade, some DVD changer with navigation, when I realize the car is going to become an aggravation for someone who thinks a car this old will be trouble free transportation. My last car, FWIW, was a BMW 328i cabrio, and that car was an utter disaster to my wallet, what with a top that by design has tolerances so tight (courtesy of Baur, AG, not the best top maker) that it basically stretches the straps over a couple of years (meaning I had to replace the ENTIRE top, in order to get those F%^%$ straps off and on/$2,000altogether ea. time) not to mention climate control/radios/ancillary electronics that go kaput as soon as the extended warranty bell goes OFF! My high learning curve of education was realized when the chief mechanic told me..."oh, you're supposed to never leave the top down when parked, or else it'll get stretch marks and won't go up or down"...at first I thought he was talking about my wife! I don't know many other ways to spend more money and have less fun (but then, wifey talked me out of an M3 before that!). So, by comparison, though I've put about 20 grand into my current car...the big light went off in my head, that, hey, 2.8T vs328 or Z vs BMW, at least my car still runs, though it is really embarrassing how its warms starts sound just like the first driving scene in Chitty, Chitty...oh, you know, it ain't the car, it's my stupid automotive addiction. FWIW, which car would you buy if you wanted top down thrills without the bills...BMW/MINI S COOPER (I have a serious sucker complex for the car/against BMW), or scrape up the cash in 5-10 years for a used Lexus SC-430? I dunno..but the T tops are a good substitute for a convertible for now.. so if anyone has simple but effective ideas why the hell my car restarts like its worth $10 (see too many posts prev.) it'd be worth a significant reward..and you won't have to see our narrator drive off a cliff-that would be the eas-Z way out! Guest jjohart
That's what my wife said (referring to sexual fantasies, when I confronted her for her having the SAME "subconcious" thoughts which she'd previously chastisted me for saying)! BONUS: Doth anyone on this noble list know if, I buy an identical "automatic tuning am/fm/cassette" unit for my 83 280ZXT off of ebay, are the components/chrome face easily separable from the trim/base, which isn't usually the same interior color as my red trimmed units? I'd rather not try to spray color it! BONUS 2: My radio/tape still light up with the dashboard lighting...is that a sign that perhaps there's nothing major wrong with the radio/amp? I tend to doubt it! Thanks John
Guest jjohart
Since no one on this list knew, FWIW, there are in fact two stock fuses in the back of the radio/casette, a 5 amp behind the radio section and another 2 amp glass tube fuse...a simple fix, for once!!
