jumblies
I have a 71 Z with the original L24/E88 enigine in need of rebuild. I have a few parts, none of which seem to be optimal for a rebuild. Does anyone have any ideas for combos for the rebuild? The motor in the car is OE L24/E88. I have a near complete N42 block and head and a spare but bare P79 head (without springs, rockers, etc). My current thoughts are: 1) rebuilding the stock 2) rebuild N42 block but exchange the dished pistons for flattops and use the E88 head 3) rebuild the N42 engine with P79 head and flattops. (this is the least palatable because of the cost) The car is not a racer, just a hobby. Cost is a factor, but I'd like to balance cost and performance. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. DavD3
If cost is a factor i would stay with stock L24/E88 combo. If you go with N42/F54 and stock head you would need to put a bigger valves in it which will cost you more money during the rebuild. I think if the car is a hobby and cost is an issue you should stay with stock.Performance can be incresed by using 5 spd and 4.11 rear end. And also do the search you can find a lot of answers on your question.Good luck.
jumblies
Thanks, I'll search and see what people have done. I hadn't considered the L24 rebuild seriously, but maybe with it rebuilt and a cam it would be a zinger.
Guest billyzbear
For a mild upgrade I would go with a 2.8L block, flattop pistons, n42 head, .495 lift and 280dur cam and early 240 carbs. This should get you close to 220hp. If you wanted to get fancy port the head and have the carbs rebored or go with 3x45mm Webers.
PUSHER
If you go with N42/F54 and stock head you would need to put a bigger valves in it which will cost you more money during the rebuild. Do you mean that n42 head on a f54 block needs larger valves? Dont think thats right, unless I missread your post.
jumblies
Thanks for the suggestions. I am still recovering from PSPD (post spindle pin disorder) and can't yet make any decisions about anything on the car without fits of profanity. Guest DoTheDrew888
I agree with Billy. I think you best option with what you have is to use the F54 block, N42 head (ported and polished), maybe a mild cam, and the flattops. That will raise your compression and give you some good low end torque and decent high end power.
